Rusty wing

Nice work Mark. Before you put it all back together have a good look at the area marked with the green circle on the pic below. There is often surface rust here as it is the route that water takes when draining out of the scuttle by the fusebox. Now is a good opportunity to get rid of it and protect with a fresh coat of underseal.

Agreed. This isn't a problem that's been an issue with many 944s in my experience, but it's bound to be a good idea if you have the option to take the wings off and re-treat the inner areas for another 20 years or more. I've seen scrap cars that have had the first signs of corrosion here, albeit very badly rusted cars overall, and there is every reason to expect it to be an area that does need attention.

Did I do this with mine? No. But that's where economics slap you in the face. The rust on my wings was limited to the area below the stone-gaurd line, so it was easily dealt with and the wings didn't need to come off at extra cost. I now look at the shiny paint, and wonder how the area below the a-pillar is holding up....[&o]

Cheers, I intend to future proof it seeing as I have the wing off,

Had my first go at a practice at making a repair panel, not quite there yet,

Not happy with it yet, will prob do another one before I weld it up, doing a lot of reading about welding as well, a departure for me to read the advice before I have done whatever it is.

Well, went for the rest of the grot, wing is all fixed up, now with a coat of filler ready to sand, took ages but happy it should last,

Then the back of the sill, that is rust converter, not any Ghostbusters type scenario,

Then the piece de resistance, the back, under the battery, at what weight does my car qualify for being a club sport ?

Cleaned up the area at the back a bit more last night, I have a fair bit of welding to do !

Any tips on once it is done how to protect it for posterity ?

As it is under the battery it will be awkward to get at, was going to paint what I can get at throught the hole as it is now and leave the edges free of paint so as not to interfere with the welding, then do the welding, when complete lash more paint in and paint the newly welded bits.

Is Por 15 better than Hammerite, bear in mind I have gallons of Hammerite and dont want to spend vast amounts.

Was then going to get some Dinotrol as everyone raves about it and do the whole car, which product do I need and how much.

Any other tips, want to make it last.

Bilt-Hamber seems to be best. I told you that even a tiny mark means terrible rust!

Do you have any more pictures of the wing repair?

Not to highjack your post. just to give you some confidence from another first time welder, metalcutter, painter. These are images from the wing repair I stonechipped last night. Topcoat and lacquer on next. Not sure how the topcoat match will turn out but, thought it worth the cost of a couple of colour matched rattle cans. If it doesn't blend well I can just have those bits done buy a bodyshop.
When you have finished give yourself a beer a skill kid award and the knowledge that when you say your car is rust free by god its rust free. Good luck and well done another one saved.

Nice work !

Not done much last day or two, I seem to have given myself tendonitis in my foot by sitting on it awkwardly whilst working on the car, am hopinh by the weekend I can walk properly again, am like Douglas bader
at the moment, I got my front wing repair sanded back and save for a couple of marks in the filler, I am astounded how good it looks, like you I will give it a go with the rattle cans but will probably take it in for a pro to do the final paint, especially seeing as I dropped the angle grinder down it.

Nice job on the wing.

Fixing the area under the battery can be a lot of work! See my thread 'seriously rusty rear quarter'. I used a section from a scrap car for the most part as the shapes are complex and I'm a novice metal basher.

Cheers Rob, I let a bit more metal into the back edge of the sill, not totally happy but it will have filler over it, its solid, agree on the back bit. The whole thing is slow going, life gets in the way, I run out of stuff or generally get sick of rooting round underneath, especially when its 28c and wearing welding garb. The front wing has its temporary coat of paint, not perfect but it doesnt jump out. I have found myself coveting BMW Z4, Boxsters and S2000's though, the temptationt o get something I spend more time in than under is strong but one way or another, I have to finish it, nobody would buy it as it is, and when its all fixed I wont be wanting to get shut.

I'm glad you repaired that you might have seen my thread. New metal is the answer not new wing..

weldone I need to do my stone chip on my car..

At least you had some wing to weld to I had nothing and no way of telling where the old one was LOL... total quess work.

Cheers, need to get back on with it, my new flap disks arrived today so can, I got 12 off Ebay for £15, B and Q wanted £12.95 for one !

Need some time off work but my colleague is in hospital with Gall Stones and they are faffing about sorting him out, the two people who perform
the relevant procedure are both off, he has been in two weeks, weekends just go ferrying kids and grandparent around, doing other jobs.
