Other will advise you better than I can, but its best to do a lot of reading about taking wings off before trying. There are a number of concealed bolts and even when you have them all, the bastard things will still be stuck on.

SO, is that typical, is my car scrap ?

Is that inner skin part of the wing or the car body ?

With the rust ont he edge i think I need to remove the wing to work on it, which I suspect may be fun.

Yes, I dont fancy removing it, though I have removed them before I have never had to re-use them but not sure how I will let new metal in to that back edge with it on the car.

If I've read the picture correctly, that inner wing part with the small hole at the bottom of picture three is part of the body itself and is a real good reason why wings should be totally removed for any repair work. A patch to the wing itself will not address the rust creeping along the inner wing part of the body.

From memory there are two bolts under the under seal where the wing meets the front door. Looking at picture 4 I think one of them has totally rusted away inside the recess to the right. Even with all the bolts removed you have to give the wing a damn good tug as it is almost 'glued' to the body with sealant

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't there three bolts holding the wing to the door pillar?

Todays work, thought I would bore you shitless with pictures of crusty old german car again,

Got the wing off, depsite the dire warnings, wasnt that bad but now need a source of new fasteners, any suggestions ?

As I suspected, the shell hasnt rusted, its just the rear part of the wing as this is what was behind the hole

The offending bit,,

Hi,

I recently bought some fasteners like those your are looking for from the OPC, they weren't too dear.

eBay is also a source of such fasteners, proving you know the size you need. I used the OPC as eBay wasn't really any cheaper.

Do appreciate pics like these... certainly for me it really helps to know what to expect when doing this sort of work. Not boring at all!

One of my front wings needs doing and it's worse than that... completely corroded at the bottom, at least yours you can still see the basic shape to work to.

Cheers for the tip on the fasteners,

Rob, not sure how I would tackle it without the shape, its basically instact but wek, just let a small piece in but decided after faffing all night it is time to go in and leave it as getting slap dash, made another piece, just building the strength back into the panel, doesnt have to be pretty on the inside, just strong and then covered in rust proofing.

I'm planning on using the other side (which is completely rust free!) as a reference for the side that is gone.
Just asked OPC Cambridge to track down a driver side sill for me... also noticed wheel arch rust on the rear quarter (the other side from the one I repaired). Think I may have to drop the fuel tank for safety before welding around there...

Another saga begins!

There is a hole there on mine as well, plus the end of the sill is grotty, will get it all sorted this year hopefully, got almost a months leave to take so should have time, it is just getting decent weather that is the issue, not having a garage I can get it in to work on.
