Running Bad Under Load ?

ORIGINAL: sulzeruk

Try a compression test as your head gasket could be on its way out.
Alasdair

Hi Alasdair

I had been thinking this too but Donal said he's done a leak down test so had dismissed it, however on rereading what he said I'm wondering if he was only speaking about the fuel system? I guess he'll belong soon to let us know...:)

Pete

It was the fuel system I was talking about Pete

I was talking to Sean last night and he will do the compression test first thing tommorrow morning as he woke in a cold sweat and thought of it on friday night [:D]

Watch this space... If it is the headgasket then I am going to have a go at it myself (under supervision of course). This will cut down on the labour charge !

Compression test worked out great.. Headgasket is fine.. Boys done a cooling system leakdown check and drained the fuel tank and put in fresh fuel just to rule that out.. No better

Myself and Sean have looked at the diagram until I could free hand draw it now at this stage.

There is only one option left and that is the KLR and DME control units.. We have literally exhausted all possibilites now

I got a DME (same part no) off eBay to try... A quick question now to the informed.. The KLR does not contain a "Chip" does it ? I dont recall seeing one while the cover was off - I didnt separate the PCB's but....... A vendor in the states advertised a KLR and said "Chip not included" which has me confused to say the least.

I will get a KLR for next week and hopefully the DME comes fairly lively... If this dosent work I will break it and put it on eBay

I am meeting with R25's Phil and Pearl Sharland and crew this Sunday in Galway.. I can drive the car but it struggles to make 60mph .. Wont be nice on a day out [:'(]

Well Lads
She is back in action and going really well. The DME landed from a fellow called Mark Carter who had it for a spare and no longer needed it. Myself and Sean plugged it in and turned the key...... No bother - Like as if nothing was ever wrong. We waited till she heated up and off we went for a test run... Car was fantastic and in my opinion is going a lot better than ever it was....[;)]

So it was the DME control unit after all.. At the start if someone would have said to me that the DME was the culprit then I would have discounted that straight away.... What put us on to the DME was a test where you run the car without the KLR.. It was no different... Also we could not get any flash codes from the DME. The car from time to time refused to boost and by switching it off and restarting this problem cleared. I am now convinced that the DME was starting to act up and it was a slippery slope after that ! We ruled out the ignition by opening the inlet tract, revving it and spraying carb cleaner into the airflow meter - She revved clean...

You know it was one part of the car I never got to grips with - Never had to look at it in fairness. I will do up the troubleshooting notes in a separate post later as I have learned a lot in the last while and you know somebody might need a bit of info.

Thanks again lads to all you fellas who put ideas into the hat..... Really appreciated it

Normal service has been resumed [:D]

Great news Donal , that's the second one I have heard of recently so looks like they are beginning to feel their age _ like the rest of us!

Now go and enjoy it!

fantastic news . [:D] nothing more frustrating than fault tracing fuel and ignition problems .
It would be interesting to look at the original ECU boards and see what components had failed .

I second peanut on that. Would be very interesting to see what component actually failed. I mean we change all manner of things all the time on our cars but I often wonder how long the DME/KLR can last before failure. I have worked with and arouind electronics all my life so I know components do fail at will sometimes. Every time I have had the chance to look at my circuit boards though they have been in tip top condition.
