Recommendations for timing belt and water pump parts suppliers

Hi all, my 1986 944 2.5 has just passed its MOT and I want to get it back on the road!

However, it has a coolant leak and the cambelt and water pump change is long overdue (last documented parts bought in 2012 and ‘check cambelt fitment’ in 2013. Service history is…patchy.

I’m planning to get the full timing belt service including water pump.

Can anyone recommend trusted UK suppliers (OEM or reputable aftermarket) for the whole kit - belts, tensioners/rollers, pump etc please. Specific to 2.5 1986 model.

Thank you!

I think most of the guys buy the parts individually so that you can purchase your preferred brand at the best price. Geba water pumps are fine, and you want INA pulleys and probably Gates / Dayco for the belts. Let me know if you want the part numbers.

Best place I've found for the pulleys and belts is eBay, usually from suppliers like "Parts In Motion", also worth checking Autodoc as they sometime have very good pricing and their delivery has gotten quicker recently.

There are a few offering "kits", like Shrivecars on eBay, Design 911, and Rare Porsche Parts, but you might pay a premium vs getting the individual parts yourself.

My turbo hasn't had a water pump in 17 years/25k miles. But the 3 cambelts were all tensioned by twisting the waterpump pulley method. Always worth trying a friendly Porsche center first, as some of the usual suspects are just adding their margin on to what they've paid Porsche.

Thank you both. Found most of the individual parts on autodoc.

One issue I have is working out whether I have an older or newer style water pump (no evidence of it being changed in history but it’s limited). This is what is leaking. From what I’ve read, 86 seems to be cross over year where it could be either? Also accessing it to check looks fiddly for a complete beginner at car diy.

I can get local independent garage to confirm as they are doing other work otherwise I’m just holding off buying bits until then.

Thinking I could get newer style pump and all matching belts, rollers etc. to go with it. Thoughts?

I’ve run the individual parts needed through ChatGPT but not sure if I trust AI fully - would prefer human reassurance!

Do these part numbers look right? (for updated water pump so conversion kit required)

Just checked against my copy of PET (Porsche Parts Database)

Water pump: 944 106 021 22 - yes get the Geba one from D911 - £144

Timing belt: 944 105 157 04 - I got mine from Porsche and it was a Gates belt (made in the UK!) - £28.34
Balance belt: 944 102 219 04 - mega expensive from Porsche, get a Gates for £70-80 from eBay (Conti belts can be noisy)

1986 car should have a manual tensioner (1987+ cars came with the "automatic" tensioner which was basically a large spring)
Timing tension roller: 944 105 027 04 - £30 on eBay (Porsche £116!)
Timing idler roller: 944 105 273 02 - £20-30 on eBay (Porsche £40)

Balance rollers: 944 102 025 07 / 944 102 277 06 - INA £30 each from eBay (vs £60+ from Porsche)

Guide rail: 944 105 213 01 - £15 on eBay (vs £60 from Porsche)
Nuts: 999 084 092 02 (x2) - special lock nut may just have to pay the Porsche tax on these (£18 for 2)

Thermostat: 944 106 129 05 - Gates, £23 from Porsche, a few quid cheaper on eBay

You may also need these other bits for the thermostat (lock ring, and spacer ring)
944 106 929 05 - seal ring (spacer)
900 042 025 01 - Securing Ring

You only need the bits below if you have also decided to do a front end reseal? There are more parts needed than listed here, you used to be able to buy a complete front end seal kit containing all the seals - PCG 100 901 50.

Cam seal: 999 113 282 40
Balance shaft seals: 999 113 331 40

I worked for Gates for 15 years, so I've usually bought their timing belts. I didn't realise Conti balance belts could be nosier, I don't recall the last one I bought being so expensive either. I'll be buying belts again soon, so all the part numbers are handy 👍.

I've got a Conti balance belt on mine - have to run it fairly loose to prevent the washing machine type noise, the teeth have a different profile to the ones on the Gates belt so I assume that is the source of the noise. I think someone mentioned it on here or rennlist as well.

Perhaps having teeth on both sides has something to do with it. I set that belt with feeler gauges rather than a special tool, and it does take some mucking around to get it right. I've mentioned on here before, that I set the cam belt with the auto tensioner, then back the tensioner off just enough to be able to turn the water pump pulley with a strong hand. The theory is that gives the water pump bearing an easier life.
