quiet forum?

I can't help but agree (and may have made a similar point earlier ). Having to log in before going to latest posts may only be a few key clicks but, in the good old days, your browser short cut would go straight to it. On my mobile devices I am never quite sure if I am logged in or not and still have "New" or "Hot" flags obliterating half of the title so I don't know what is "New" or "Hot" or whatever without clicking it. Of the several fora I frequent this is by far the least satisfying experience.

When the new software was launched I was quite explicit in expressing how bad I thought it was and how it was going to ruin the forum, while you, probably because you are an admin, were trying to see the glass half full and ended up posting something in the likes of "love or leave it" comment, probably in the face of not being able to bring proper argumentation to the relevant points I brought at the time... how ironic to see you seem to have changed your opinion now... Are you sure you aren't a girl....storing up past long forgotten misdemeanours to use in evidence against me? Not the sort of thing blokes do. With regard to proper "argumentation" (is that even a word?) I am only human and was probably sick to the back teeth with the bickering from people who don't contribute to the cost of providing the form.

The first iteration on this new forum was pretty dire and a lot of people spent a lot of time improving it a great deal...it was really bad and you should have seen the pre launch version [:'(]. Unfortunately the overriding issue remains, I believe as an integration with the web site and the ability to pay on line - which in itself is really great feature. The down side is we have to keep re-logging in which, quite frankly, does my head in. But it is what it is.

I think the 944 community is in a state of flux and conversion. 10 years ago we all enjoyed the 944 as cheap performance (aka Boy Racers) The 944 is now moving towards the guise of treasured classic. For a great many we can no longer risk ragging them to within an inch of their life on a track and kissing tyre walls as to do such would now destroy something of an investment. We have moved from a forum which was predominately "Make it go faster....improve this....improve that" to "Where can I get this bit to keep it on the road." The 944 was a great track car. While the car hasn't changed the economics have. Today, if you want a good cheap sports car for road and track you buy a second hand Boxster.

[:D] Welcome to the club.
As for 944 values, if the worst happened to mine I don't think I'd have another. It took me many months to find one 10 years ago. And I'd look for something that was a lot easier to work on now. 15 years ago a 944t was still a very fast car, now there's AWD hatchbacks that would be all over it. Plus if you break one of those you can buy another one the next day.

Well I'm here most days, and still enjoy it. There were some very helpful comments/advice about my recent front suspension post, even offers of help! Feeling guilty though, as I haven't actioned the work yet. Will report when I've made my mind up...

And I don't reckon the car's that valuable yet, so still doing Prescott Hill Climb School, Curborough etc., but a bit more circumspect about track days...having said that I reckon a PCGB day would be less risky than the Brands Hatch ones that we did looking out for all the stripped out hot hatches!

I must have hit a nerve. So basically, instead of acknowledging you were wrong from the beginning, you keep behaving like the black knight in the MP's holy grail. This is neither a man or a woman's behaviour - it's just stupid... or at least certainly quite a bit grumpy, as mentioned in your avatar.

I sometimes think our cars values shooting up is more of a curse then a good thing,,,
Makes a 996 or Cayman more justifiable to the wife though lol,,,

Guys, can we put the "the old forum was better" thing to bed? []

Keeping the old forum was NOT an option. We needed several updates to get to the newest version, and the old version we were running was no longer supported. Updating to the newer version of ASP was essential, not a choice.

Moving to a different platform entirely was possible, but we would have lost this huge archive of technical advice. Merely locking this as a searchable archive was possible, but not ideal, and as John said, the new platforms were absolutely horrible when we were given the initial versions to test.

This forum is provided free by PCGB, but it has to be accountable to the membership and we can't spend tens of thousands a year on it. It will change as new updates come out, so unfortunately it won't always be the same, comfortable old format.

Let's just get on and enjoy it, rather than moaning that it's changed. [:)]

Hi, still pop in when I get a moment, I did 220 miles between Mots on the cab last year though so not had a lot of time for playing with 944s, very busy with work, 3 years into a 4 year project that is taking us all over the country Lands end to the Shetland islands with some pretty remote spots in between!
Tony
Cant get much more remote than the Shetlands

I'm still here. And every bit as handsome as ever .... [:)]

Interesting comments from one and all though. And I agree that this is the best 944 forum out there, using the word 'forum' in the broadest sense; the FB groups aren't as good.

Oli.

:)

Broad Law was pretty remote as a site, 1/2 an hour off road on a good day, and that was a turning off a B road that was at least half an hour from a town :) Isle of Lewis felt remote though we were only half an hour from Stornorway. Isle of Man was an exposed location but not too far from town. Sheltlands we will be at the airport so far away but not too remote ;) Lands end only a short hop for us compared to some.

Interestingly, previously with the 'new' forum when clicking on an email link it did take me to the log in page where I had to click log in (browser had filled in my password) now it takes me straight in without the need too hit the login button.......

Mine does too Tony but it doesn't give a true picture of recent activity..for example if not logged in no new posts are shown, log in and hey presto, there's life, well sometimes...:)

Not sure that ever worked that well! It is easier to keep track of it now the forum is quieter though! Being old school from titanic, I tend to read most posts as emails though, only logging in to reply or look at pics

My 944 t is sat in the garage, been too busy with other projects but looking forward to getting it finished. I agree that the increase in values has changed the way the 944s are seen. I almost looked at putting mine back to standard but then in reality thought I would rather have it the way I want. Looking at prices of other old cars there's not much else. I have a Cayman s which I have just sold but it's just not the same as the older 944s. Can't see me ever getting rid, just collecting bits as they come up.

I agree with Paul.
If you look at the people posting on this thread you will notice that many of them are not the ones paying the bill. They are listed as 'Guest of the Club'.

I have been pondering the same. Putting the drivers seat back might prove something of a challenge as I no longer have it but I could certainly take the race seat out on the passenger side and put back the original.
