Project S2, it's a biggun!

I don't like welding, I'd rather drill out snapped bolts. Its a day later & the motor is in. Hurrah! A few install pics, showing the jack adaptor I made -

Looks good. Do you always fit the engine from the bottom instead of the top. Is there a reasonj for this. It's just that I will have to pull the engine on mine soon and wondered which was easier.

Its certainly the easier option if you don't have a ramp on your driveway. With my axle stands at maximum height there is enough room to slide the engine in but the bumper, radiator & rad support bracket have to be removed. Even then its a tight fit - which is why I've fitted it sans head, it allows a couple of extra inches of headroom. I'd never fit it from above, even with a crane, the bonnet would have to come off & there is a lot of stuff in the way - like the headlamp mechanism (the engine has to come forwards a couple of inches to clear the prop). It is 'quite' easy to do it on your own from underneath, the trick is to leave the crossmember fitted to the engine which gives a large platform to lift on.
 
Great going and congrats on your persistence. Should be very rewarding firing her up for the first time and pulling out of the driveway.
 
Thanks for the positive comments! Its not perfect but I can't afford the time/money required to make a concours car. plus I'm getting impatient now & want it finished!

Good luck with project I love my S2 cab so can understand your aim, trawl through the 944 forum a week or so ago I came across a thread on cheap 944 S2 bought by a mechanic for £1200 spent £200 on parts including a 2nd hand clutch that had done circa 8k for £75 2 days labour & total £1400 had a good S2.
Clarkes Garage a USA web site dedicated to 944's has a lot of usefull info on how to do jobs on 944's worth a look if you're stuck? Likely in technical area there was a thread on 944 alternative parts 2.5 A4 pages of original 944 parts used by other makers ie S2 distributor cap from Porsche £44 same cap from GSF £20. the document listed makers part number along side Porsche part number!

I'm picking up the rest of the engine bits I need tomo - cam chain & slipper pads, new breather hose & valve (promax & OPC). Then I only need the service bits (fluids & filters) to finish off the engine. Hurray! The project is on target to cost less than the figure quoted above and this includes new belts, cyl head recon, clutch, every engine seal & gasket renewed, recon brake calipers etc etc. Don't worry Tony, I won't get stuck, I've worked on Porsche's for a living so I know them pretty well!
 
Update. The head is on, radiator in plus lots of little jobs like hoses, heatsheilds, exh manifold etc etc. I got the cams in today with the new chain & tensioner pads. I still need to do the cam timing & attatch the pulley but this will have to wait until my newly painted cam covers are dry. In the meantime, here are some pics of the cam tensioner - the original from this car is the (very) heavily worn one. You can see the top pad is missing entirely & the bottom one has disintegrated. The whole tensioner is scrap due to the top damage caused by the chain, this is quite extreme wear compared to some. You can also make out the grooves on the not so worn one and the new pads on the left.

Got lucky there i,d say , old slipper could have got caught between chain and gear and caused cathostropic damage. Phew ,well done and nice quality pics . She'll be a real beauty when finished ![:)]
 
Quick update, I've managed to get a couple of days off and it is now running. Hurray! I'll endeavor to get some pics up tomorrow.
 
I had seen that car at Promax and assumed it was there as a donor, it was filthy !

I was going to ask your background as what you are doing on axle stands fascinates me and I would love to do it. Having read the prior posts I now understand how come you can indeed take the car on. I dont think I would lack the ability to learn but would 'never' even get close to the patience required and I'm well aware of it !

One day hopefully I will meet the car in person [;)]

A few pics of the engine installed. I had some alarm issues (not surprising, it hadn't been active for the last 4ish years!) but thats sorted now. I still have a few little jobs to do, like sorting the vacuum hoses.

Does it?? I can't imagine where I got the inspiration for that! Also did the top belt cover & inlet manifold, they just didn't look as nice before.
 
I had considered polishing it or painting it body colour, or highlighting the script but then I saw Rich's 968 which looked really smart so I copied his. It is paint - Hammerite smooth silver no less.
