over the air map updates on PCM 4 (991.2) anyone?

A member on the Panamera register reported his update had started 'automatically' so I thought I'd try it on mine.
I got it to upload ..

but then my SIM card required (auto) top-up and download paused. When my SIM card gets to a minimum value it automatically charges my credit card but there is a 10 minute delay for request, credit card accepts charge, SIM card updated.

So I switched all off, turned ignition back on, found Nav update page and it restarted from the 67% point and I left it when it had got up to 80%. When I returned to the car some 45 mins later I got this.

It is parked in its garage. Decided to call it a day in the hope that it had fully loaded the maps so tomorrow I'll take it out round the block and park it in the garage - hopefully that will finish the map update.

Looks like Porsche AG have sorted their server issue. Make sure you have lots of data left on the car's SIM card. I'll see what tomorrow's parking experience brings..

And this morning whilst in its garage, turned ignition on, the car had decided it was indeed parked and Nav screen showed this:

So there is some step to finish the update but I am not sure what it is other than ignition "on" / "off" on some basis. I wonder now whether I can update some more maps (beyond the apparent 3 per update limit), but I’ll leave that for next week’s experiment in the world of Porsche software.

Here's the odd thing, your displayed version is 2020.2 which I downloaded November (ish) last year. Have there been no updates this year?

I was led to believe, as part of the connect subscription, that there should be 2 updates per year

Nick

Good to know, I wonder if it just downloads the next, not the latest version, - a bit stupid but with Porsche? The two updates a year does not mean the map database is updated twice annually, just that owners can run two update processes although... I did try to see if I could update any more maps but all save for the ones I had updated, were Greyed Out and not selectable. The updated ones were highlighted but not selectable.

The car goes in for Exeter to have another go at updating in January whilst having a 4 year service so my plan is to keep quite about the over air update and see what happens. I'll have them show me which version they update to.

As we discovered on the GT4s Nick, Porsche are still at C: stage.

Presumably you are paying the £139 per year subscription fee to access the navigation updates and other facilities - do you think it is worth it? I must admit I haven't bothered with it and find Google Maps and Waze, via Apple Car Play to be an acceptable option at no cost.

HI, I've done the same. I also use CarPlay and googlemaps on my phone. It displays on the main screen. Only thing that it doesn't do as well is to display on the dial behind the steering wheel. It more than makes up by offering real-time traffic updates and alternative routing if needed.

I thought I’d try the subscription with my main objective being able to update the maps. I didn’t see parking or petrol prices as a benefit but I have the found traffic notices useful.

My experience of Waze has been variable because the mobile data signal disappears from time to time. Its in-journey messages can be both helpful and distracting. The GPS speed indicator is useful. As a navigation device, it often won’t calculate a route when I set off and I often have to revert to Maps or Google Maps for an on-line system, both of which seem more robust in holding and connecting to the mobile data signal.

I prefer to have the car Navi running (maps always available) plus Waze (to get its warning messages and GPS speed) or when Waze is being difficult, one of the other two above.

I ran a Cayman for 6 years without updating the maps and didn’t get lost.

With Porsche’s maps apparently held in several files and being limited to updating only 3 files twice a year, I can’t see that the traffic notices will sway me to renewing.

I have exactly the same issue.
shows an update available but fails.

Did you select three regions to be updated?

I selected England south and north. Does it need to be x3?

I’ve paid for the Porsche Google maps and it just give me a fail message

It all seems to be a mystery with people getting different results. Mine just started working after I’d read a similar thread on the Panamera section as reported earlier.

Maybe a PCM soft restart might work? My car has been sold so I don’t have access to the manual.

My PCM map updating had appear to be working OK until today, I tried to select additional countries to update however I am no longer able to select any country to update?? Could it could that all the countries are up to date, however I would expected to have visible some statement as per as UK map updates and the recently updated Belgium map but not anymore countries . Has anyone else experienced this issue before?

There is a Porsche update to the Pcm that is needed. The dealer will have to make sure they have the SD card big enough, then they need to download it from Porsche Germany. Once they have the update the over the air maps should then work (assuming you have the connect subscription.)

mine went in to get done, but they called to say they couldnt get it to work so they have ordered me a new PCM - which seemed a bit drastic, but I dont care as I have the warranty!. just waiting for the Pcm.

you can easily download the latest maps for free and update them yourself! (which I had been doing whilst I have been waiting the year for porsche to get there act together)

Would like to know the URL to download the files so can install them via a SD card. Do you have the URL handy? Thank you. I can only find the option to download them directly from the the PCM itself which I can not do.

I subscribed to the Navigation & Infotainment Services yesterday. I couldn't get it to work so searched the internet and found this post. This is exactly the same issue I have. Reading the post is seems the resolution is "painful" and so not wishing to have to battle for it to work I've cancelled the subscription under the 14 day cooling off period.

Pity really as I like the convenience of the integrated navigation.

I started the original post. I even had my PCM unit replaced under warranty - which didn't fix the issue at all! its obviously something in the backend servers with Porsche.
Anyway I just download the maps to a SD card and update them manually by sticking the SD card in.

Porsche cancelled the subscription no fuss so thats good. Could I ask where you got the maps from? I am UK based and searching online I see some "push” options but would prefer the files I can put on an SD card that don’t screw up the system so interested in the way that worked for you. Many thanks.
