Opinion on these two mods

I have a 944s ventiler owned a couple of months now and love the car, can't believe how captivating the 944 is. Anyway I have considered a couple of mild mods and just wondered if anyone on here has got them and are they worth it
1. K&N filter 2. Management chip
The first I guess has to improve breathing especially at the high end of the tacho!, the second one sounds like a good upgrade and have seen them on ebay but do they deliver and are they worth it. Im not after tyre smoking performance ( would have gone for the turbo for that!) but feel the 2.5 16v could do a little better. Any thoughts?

K&N: why not, provided that its a replacement panel type? DME chip: depends from whom.

Btw ventiller means valve in German, it wasnt a model name. The expensive option rubbing strips (16 Ventiller) were simply a profit driven 16v badge.

I'd look at the general condition of service parts before changing anything, perhaps even a dyno to see how many of the ponies are still in the stable?

944s are notoriously reliable, and are often running on incredibly worn leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm etc. The "s" is prone to valve guide wear, and can be significantly down on power.

For chips, I'd always go to a recommended supplier before ebay.

I should have mentioned my car has had a full engine rebuild including all new valves, seats, guides, piston rings, all shells belts guides, etc etc 10k miles ago, could it be still running in/ loosening up?

Youre probably in an ideal position now. Tom Barker could really make a difference to that, if his supercharger and ECU all comes together.

Mmmm sounds tempting, wasn't thinking of going that far but might have a think! Anyone recommend a good chip, are the ones on ebay any good? Can you get up rated cams, Kent, piper etc want to take it to the ring next year

Which two mods? McNulters has always been OK, after a fashion. Who is the other one 'round here these days? I think Smiffy handed in his ticket a while back. Is Jon Trasler still a mod? (Does he still have a 944?)

Oh, not that sort of mod ... sorry, as you were ... []

Promax chip raised the rev limiter on mine, felt silghtly faster.

De cat would be better.

Don't fit a cone filter, S run very hot much hotter then turbos. When I tryed it, put my air box back on and it felt like an upgrade.

No cams, no. It isnt impossible, but it is massively impractical. Piper can regrind your cams to a Louts profile, but an Augment Automotive ECU and a supercharger will be cheaper and far, far more productive. Otherwise, in order to make it faster, spend money on the suspension.

I wasn't aware mine had a cat, think its got a s/steel system the manifold has been heat wrapped all the way down to the down pipe, done during engine rebuild, does the pro max chip, alter ignition and fuel? Was only going to consider a panel filter, don't like cone filters

Yes and yes.....my vigilence is undimmed [;)]

As for the OP's question, a chip will help smooth out the delivery and maybe add just a small amount of power. Wouldn't go to ebay for one though - several indies supply themand that's where I would go personally.

K&N panel yes too.

I'd agree with that as well; the S's were always quite peaky so gaining a few ft-lb in the mid-range will be useful. I don't know how effective the chips were on the S, but on the S2 they were well worth while.

K&N won't make a lot of difference to anything but will make it cheaper to run in the long run (cleaning an re-oiling a K&N is cheaper than buying a new filter after a while.)

I didn't know that the S ever had a cat either.

Does it have the same throttle cam as the Lux? That's a cheap and easy thing to change. I don't know how much difference a chip like the Pormax one would make to an S, have any of the owners tried it?

I dont believe that Ss have a cat in the UK. That would mean that youd be only able to run on unleaded petrol at the end of 1986 (before it was available)...

I've read various independent tests on performance vs OEM air filters. Generally performance filters flow more air and filter out less dirt. Its your choice. Plenty of info around on the net on this subject.

My S has a promax chip, but was fitted before I bought it so I don't know what a 'normal' one feels like but I've often seen in said on here that the S lacks mid range grunt, mine seems to have plenty throughout the range so it may well improve it. I also have the dreaded cone filter [:)] , again fitted before I got it, but do still have the original box filter.

Re fit the box, you need a few brackets I MIT have mine still.

I went with a long life system and I'm pretty sure they removed a cat

Was yours an S2? Makes no sense that an S would have been fitted with a cat at that time, although the Germans were fitting them before other car manufacturers.

No was 2.5 S 16v

I'm sure I asked it to be decated, as it could be due 2 age maybe I'm just mistaken.

Promax chip set recommend cone filter set up and apprentlly is mapped for one. However its far too hot under there to make it worth while.
