non porsche weather!

Have had my 964 a couple of weeks now and have only had 3-4 days of weather good enough to take it out.

Has been overcast all of the other time and the car hasn't been out in the rain for atleast 2 years and I am hoping to keep it that way.

I wouldnt even mind just a couple of hours of clear skies but we dont seem to even get that over this way at the moment.
 
Feel the same way, now I've got the 993 dry dont want to get it wet if I dont have to !! Its frutrating waiting for the nice weather to arrive. Bought my car at the begining of last summer and we had the crapiest of summers.

Should have taken the opportunity for a drive yesterday morning but I didn't, today the weathers horrible again. Still I am sure there will be plenty of good driving days to come.

Wait for the wrath of people posting that the cars should be driven all the time in response to your post though !!!

Try to keep mine as a dry day car too, but hey when it's time for mot or service, when i have no choice about going out, it always..... always pour's down [>:]

The trick to spring and autumn driving is a decent sealant and lots of wax on your paint.. Ive used carlak nano sealant this year, with a couple of layers of P21S Carnuba wax over the top.. Once a year the car gets a complete strip back to paint, clay, Meg's 3-step polish, then sealant and 2 or 3 layers of wax.. This just gets topped up with wax when needed (every 2 weeks normally) and a re-seal and wax every 3 months or so. This gives loads of protection to the paint, and mud and dirt just slides off..

This is from race-retro on sunday, photo taken monday afternoon... You can see the car is pretty clean, just pasted in mud from the car park (and I was only driving slowly to make sure it didnt get too caked up! )

And this is after a 1/2hr wash down and a mist over with some last-touch detailer spray.. ignore the tyres and wheels (it went dark before I cleaned them) and also I just noticed I missed the inside edge of the rear bumper [:mad:]
Also I have some crap on the lens of the camera, that isnt a scratch on the front of the arch and a barnicle on the rear [:D]

I agree that these cars are made to be driven, however i do take mine off the road for the winter, but once the road salt is gone and you get the occasional good day when you can do a proper clean I reckon there is a lot to be said for keeping it well protected and using it as much as possible..

They make them out of metal so they don't shrink in the wet.....mine just got its first wash since the Spa 24 Hours since when it has endured everything the winter has to offer and it came up sparkling.
 
Since it's been mentioned that protection is the key to making our cars last the bad weather, what do people do about the underneath? I've had it recommended that all panels and liners are taken off, the car steam cleaned and waxoil applied?

Does anyone do this thereself and if so what are your tips?

p.s. can I get waxoil as a spray?
 
Doing mine this weekend hopefully, im using Wurth stuff. Yeah clean/jetwash underside, I use a place local to me that looks after hgv`s (drive on ramps) Slap on POR15 where required, make sure everything is bone dry, mask-up then wax everything posible, (using shults gun type thing) Try www.fost.co.uk also try John at unit eleven he does it.
 
best to do it in the middle of summer on the hottest day, as the steam cleaning will dry out completely.. I have done my MG in the past and the 964 is due to be done this summer once Ive sorted the couple of little rust spots and the stonechipped bonnet!..

last summer (because the weather was rubbish) i had the MG steam-cleaned and then put it in the carcoon for a couple of days to dry it out completely, then did it.. if you get a couple of hot days then it will take a couple of hours to dry if that..

waxoyl is available in a small barrel with a pump sprayer thing ontop as a kit, as are the alternatives (wurth, etc). Its a bit of a messy job, but if you have a garage or someone has a lift you can borrow so you can get under the car and put some sheets down its not too bad.. Also worth removing the seat-belts and squirting some inside the pillar, just make sure not to let the nozzle come out or you'll end up with underseal all over the inside of the car!..
