New W.Midlands member - 944 S2 track modified - For Sale

Hi Will There are quite a few s2 track cars appearing on the forum now - we should try and get them all out this summer Keep us posted on your trackday plans - in the Sig is handy.. Maybe a Goldtrack silverstone evening would be a good one to aim for? That's been a traditional forum meet over the years (although maybe turbo have been in the majority) Ed
 
Hi. Nice to read there are other track goers here. I'll use the car as my daily commuter for a few weeks - to get to know if there are any issues that need sorting before then booking a track day.

Just put a deposit down on a 1989 944 S2 with a few track modifications :)

Collection tomorrow, but for the moment here are the advertisement photos.

Looking forward to learning more about the 944 and getting out and driving it on track.

Welcome Will and look forward to further posts as you get to know the car. We've watched that one on the forum for some time, so it's nice to see someone has bought it at last [:)]
 
What was the forum verdict (I hope not too critical) - if there's a link to the thread that would be nice. I don't think I over paid for the car - but time will tell how good the car is mechanically.

Looking forward to seeing it in use, evenings with Goldtrack at Silverstone are an occasional 944 "event" in the summer! Good luck with it and we do like photos[:D]

Coolant change was made difficult by having to remove the front spoiler held in by a dozen hidden screws. Front arches looking fairly decent plus lots of life in the pads and discs, so only needed to change the brake fluid

Rear arches looking quite dirty but only a minimal amount of rust and nothing to bother the MoT man

Removed the sill covers to reveal some rust. Drilled small holes in the top of the sill by pulling aside the carpet and sprayed 'rust converter'. This might give a year or so extra life

Hard to imagine that the car began the day in the garage and will be back in tomorrow evening

I learnt that I didn't own an oil filter removal tool - so used to modern cars with plastic housings. Tomorrow's job is to paint the arches with Hammerite and then spray on Dinitrol.
 
Nice work [:)] How does the car feel now that you've had it a week, any first impressions you didn't think you'd have?
 
Only done the one leisure drive since buying it. it feels larger and heavier than my mx5 (obvious I guess). Steering feel is excellent, though turn in quite slow. It needs a geometry check i feel. Brakes progressive but lack bite - new fluid may solve that. Torque is very good, making it easy to push on without having to change down a gear. Pedals feel tightly spaced together, which will feel more natural in time i'm sure. Generally I'm happy i bought the car, but I'll be even happier once all the jobs are done.
 
Don't be putting axle stands on the 2 oval lugs at either end of the sills. The centre one is fine but the ones at the front and back were for when the car was on the assembly line. Put the rear one on the large round aluminium mount or the flat part of the mount for the trailing arm part of the axle. The front one goes about a foot under the body on a large raised strengthening rib just back from the rear castor mount. You may find that the front one has pushed the body in slightly if there is any corrosion there. It bends the floor in the corner as these are not designed to be jacked. Alasdair
 
Thanks for the axle stand info - though these are the locations as given in the handbook and where the car would be lifted if on a 4 post rig.
 
Regarding the brakes, try pulling out the pads with a pair of pliers. If they are really stiff or even impossible to remove then you will have 'plate lift' which prevents the pads sliding seamlessly against and away from the disk. This massively dulls the feel and urgency of the brakes. It's a relatively easy fix and needs to be done every few years. Now they feel red hot again [8D]

Dinitrol applied to the rear arches. Some over spray on the flanges, but this is more about rust prevention and aesthetics

Does anyone know how to remove the oil filter? Even with a chain type toll I can't see the space to wrap it around the filter.

I can see from underneath the car the sill are not pretty. I'll look to get these and possibly the front wings replaced before the next MoT. (I wonder how it just passed the current MoT with no advisories!)

I hammered a screw driver through my oil filter and used this to turn it to get it out but with no power steering on my square dash there was more room to do it than you'll have on your S2. My chain tool didn't work on it either, hence the back to basics approach!
 
Thanks chaps. I've bought a tool that looks like a pair of wide mouth pliers. Looks like it should do the job.
