I've spoken to Alisdair and viewed the car yesterday. It looks and drives superbly BUT and this is a big but there is absolutely no service history prior to 2007 and no Service Book with the car!!!

I am starting to think that for a couple of thousand more I can get a car with Full Service History (and maybe a few stone chips on the front) but in the future I know it will still have a better re sale value?

p.s. Ruddy says Hello [:D]

No service history before 2007 - I can appreciate it's not ideal, but if it's comprehensive from that point forward then maybe not so important. (is it worth 4k?) I don't know if a Porsche centre would give you a print out of its history in the Porsche network?

Are you buying to store and re-sell? or are you looking for a car to use?

I can get a confirmed low mileage 250bhp model for ÂŁ3000 more with Full History and immaculate interior so that is my decision to make but I think the history is important if not essential.

With no history there is no way of confirming the mileage or what work has been done in the past?

Good point on mileage - they are / were a prime candidate for clocking as they wear the miles very well

What info can you get from DVLA now?

An HPI check or similar should bring up any mileage discrepancies if previous owners have filled this in when the cars were sold, or from MOT tests. Porsche dealers used to be happy to confirm a vehicles service history within the network, but the 'new' Data Protection Act appears to have ended this, as people are ignorant and scared in equal measure...

The revised DPA doesnt actually prevent anyone from telling you anything about the car of course, but because they presume that it does its very difficult to get past. A friend of mine ran into this recently with a 944 - the OPC were friendly and helpful and they told him that it was well looked after, but cited 'data protection' as their reason for not confirming exact details or stamping up service book for him. Theyre completely in the wrong, but how do you challenge them? You cant ever convince a person that theyre wrong and you are right through arguing.

You can check all the old MOTs on the direct.gov.uk website from the date when computerised MOTs started. This also tells you what failures and advisories the car had when it was MOTed. No history is no big thing, you can usually tell what cars have been clocked usually from condition, etc. As long as the belts, etc are up to date, that's all I would be worried about. At the end of the day, they are 25 year old cars and there are ones out there with 200k on them that drive better than ones with 100 k on them.
Onno's car mileage certainly looked genuine from what I have seen of the car.

Martin,
Have you not thought about an S2 ? very capable cars, not as tuneable but every bit as good, have you checked with Jon Mitchell at JMG garages (Google Them) he is a respected specialist and is trustworthy, he sells the odd one now and again and has his own "collection"
Been on the phone to Mr Ruddy this evening as he also has a 944/968 thing again............he should never have sold H3 BUF !

Buy on condition and not necessarily mileage, obviously history helps, check for rot on the sills inner and outer, remove the air vent from the rear panel when the door is opened, doors generally do not rot, front wing bottoms are also another problem area.
PS they are way better engineered than any Ford [;)]

Yes I've looked at S2's as well but think I really want a Turbo.

I may have one lined up with low miles and full history so will keep you updated :)

Agree, they are better built than my old Fords and cost a fraction of the price!!!

Good Luck keep us posted, loads of help and advice on here plus bits always for sale, you will have to get to some of our meets and do some travels with us, Germany in May ?

300BHP easily and reasonably cheaply available with a turbo, and depending on how deep your pockets are.................!

One or two posters on here in the process of building big HP cars, but TBH a stage 2 tune is more than enough for our roads.

If your down Nr Ruddys anytime let me know.

Jim, he has the deepest pockets I have ever known, only slightly deeper than yours, whilst us poor pensioners have to scrape by [;)]

He also likes to pop round and scoff my Wagon Wheels ...

Now then Lad, if only i had deeper pockets the 220 would have KW 3's and a few more choice bits !
Gents we have 2 more prospective buyers on here from ooop North, both going to see cars shortly which will if bought go to good homes !
Of course i have not encouraged them [:D]

Got a car sorted now [:)]

944 Turbo in Metallic Grey with 47,000 miles and a Full Service History.

Drove it back from London to Gretna yesterday (350 miles) and it was a dream

Looking forward to catching up at some shows and run outs in 2013

Excellent news! Photos please and full details re any modifications etc. well done and remember to bring it up this way too!

Excellent news - welcome to the glorious and slightly mad world of 944 ownership ! Oh and had anyone mentioned we need pictures of your new steed ?

The car is standard except for the Boxter alloys that are currently fitted but are being sold and replaced with the correct Design 90 alloys next week.

Car was originally supplied by Evans Halshaw Warwick and the options fitted were :-

220 LSD
288 Headlight Washers
383/387 Sports Electric Seats
490 Upgaded Stereo Package
526 Cloth Covered Door Panels
533 Alarm
573 Air Conditioning
593 ABS
605 Headlight Adjustment
650 Electric Sunroof

The seats feel like new and I don't think the rear seats or passenger seat have hardly been sat in they are that good. There are a few stonechips as expected, but all the electrics etc. work and the body is in excellent condition with bone dry sills and no leaks anywhere.

Here are a few pics before I bought it, and I will put more up when I have changed the wheels and added the Cup Sport steering wheel [;)]
