My cars VIN shows it to be an 944S when it isn't

Just had the rear brakes cleaned up and replaced, all the fluids done etc. I was hoping to do this myself but got well and trully stuck with a pad pin that was rusted in. I just don't have enough tools, so I booked it in to my local independant, RPM in Knaresborough and spent the day with them seeing how it is done properly and learnt loads.

Anyway, when we came to put the new discs on that I had ordered, they were clearly not going to fit, the dish wasn't deep enough. My supplier was surprised as the part numbers were correct for the car, but could get the deeper depth discs, but sadly didn't have them in stock. So RPM ordered some from their supplier and guess what, the parts that turned up were the same and didn't fit. Eventually they managed to get the right parts, but on checking with Leeds OPC my VIN number turns out to indicate that the car is a 944S. But it isn't it has an 8 valve engine.

I have all the receipts going back to year dot and the mileages add up and there is no mention of an engine change that I can find and so on. So has anyone else come across this as it appears that car needs the S parts. Is there a difference or were there simply two options and the VIN is an anomoly?

Do you still use the original wheel, if so what is their offset?
ET 23.3 means your car is no more recent than an '86, ET52 means it will be '87 or more recent.
S are '87/'88 only.
What is the engine number?

ORIGINAL: edh

944S and an '87 8V will have the same brakes won't they?

944.352.041.03

Yes, same brakes, whats the VIN no? Maybe its an 86 car? rear discs changed in 87

Boxster wheels are late offset, so would need a huge spacer to fill the arches F&R on an early car. I doubt anyone produced a copy with 23.3 offset.

Far more likely to have had a replacement 8v engine, loom and ECU. The 944S 'became' unreliable in about 1995/1996 and you couldnt get replacement cylinder heads used (bottom ends were abundant though!). The common solution was either a lower spec 8v or a slightly dearer, but easier to find S2 engine.
