My 2022 Cayman GTS

So after a full day of cleaning, the GTS is nice and clean again. I took the Zunsport grilles off to clean out the dead flies and wasps and grikey, there was a lot. Took me about 45 mins just to clean them all out using a bug remover spray, hoover and compressed air. The rads have taken a little battering but nothing too detrimental, glad I had the grilles fitted though.

As a side note, during the 2200 miles, the GTS used about 180mls of oil. I'm putting that down to the engine being hot for long periods and burning off any moisture/ fuel contamination that may well be in the oil however, something in the back of my mind tells me that Porsche are using the same technology that Ferrari used in their F1 cars whereby a small amount of oil was added into the combustion chamber to increase power. I'd be grateful if this thread isn't used to start this discussion, and I'll start a seperate one for this, but very much food for thought.

We have done several such trips to Europe in our 987.2 Boxster. The perfect car for a sense of adventure and simple practicality. It eats those tedious long miles.

I think planning ahead is crucial for every detail and don't underestimate the heat side to you and the car.
We carry a spare plug top as they can break down due to heat, esp # 5 cylinder. This happened to us in austria, but with the spare to hand, no propbs.

I would certainly add break down cover to the Must Have list!

Very good advice to never speed, the cameras are in place the police there too esp where there are lots of tourists, it removes a lot of stress every day.

Now you have a real taste for this game, start planning the next one...

We are off in Sept to a simple run into France. Using the Chunnel to get there but, after avoiding a ferry for 30 years, coming back on one.

ANYTHING but the demoralising run from Dover to home after the sheer joy of European motoring.

Great write-up. They take ages to post but we all love'em!

Well done for making the effort to post such a comprehensive and informative series of posts Dan, and good to hear that it was such an enjoyable trip.👍

Dan,

Really enjoyed reading your euro-tour report. It brought back happy memories of my tour to Stuttgart and the Black Forest in 2018. This was pre-Brexit. A lot simpler, and cheaper back then.

I used the Euroshuttle for a tour to Cognac region with my 987.2 CS, and was also pleased to be loaded onto the single deck carriages.

For the Germany tour I took the DFDS car ferry from Newcastle to Ijmuiden which was best for me. The marshalling stewards were very respectful and directed my 718 CS away from the big bulky stuff.

Great report and photos Dan.

A very nice chap on Rennlist has done a cutaway rendering of a CGTS 4.0 in Aventurine Green for me. He does quite a few colours and models so GT4, Spyder, CGTS, BGTS etc and if you send him your build code he will put on as many of your options as possible. He also does 2 renderings of the 4.0 engine. If you want them in high res, he charges $50 for all 3 so you can make them poster size. Not too sure if he does the 2.0 or 2.5 but I'll ask the Q.

Here's what he's done for me. If you want his email address, drop me a PM.

Hi Dan, do you know whether this guy still does these renderings? I note the cost back in 2021 was $50, so assume he is in America?

Great report Dan and thanks for sharing. As already mentioned putting such a detailed write up to gather take considerable effort and time.

Another year has gone by and how it’s flown.

March is a big month in our household with car insurances, road tax, house insurance and car servicing all needed at the same time. Needless to say March is not my favourite month.

So the GTS went in for its 4 year service and MOT the day before yesterday. I asked my brilliant service advisor not to find any issues but he failed me and a phone call a couple of hours after dropping it off informed me of a leaking timing chain tensioner. Not good. Fortunately it was an easy fix covered under my extended warranty, if I had to pay for it the part is £85 but labour £258! Ouch. They didn’t have the part in stock so I had the loaner (a Macan T) for an extra day. I’d also asked them to put some anti seize on the coil pack bolts. Not a normal request, so I’m told, but they said probably a good shout to prevent them sticking and breaking further down the line.

Collection time yesterday. No issues apart from the above and no advisories on the MOT however they did say that the fronts would probably need replacing by time rather than mileage. I’ll probably get them done at the end of the year/beginning of next. Tyres have 4mm all round so the geo done and Ninemeister back when I got the car is holding up well although I’ll get them to check and adjust when there are some new boots on.

The cost? Well including the MOT and I bought some engine air filters was £1964.55. £92 for the air filters and the standard £54 for the MOT. £15 for the loan car.

I did have a mooch the cars in stock and wow, 911s are lovely but a base C2 is over 100k. They had a PTS C2 with a couple of options and it was £133k!! I don’t think the 9% interest rate is helping sales as they had 8 brand new 911s in the compound still with the wrappers on and no buyer. Apparently Porsche are ordering cars for production and dumping them on dealers. The unfortunate thing is they are specced up to death which makes them expensive however there are deals to be done on physical cars. I’m told you’ll get a good 10% discount off a .2 GTS and if you go for a registered car you’ll be looking at £20k discount if not more. They had a couple of 992.1 GTS’ in the showroom with not a lot of miles on the clock for £106k and in honesty, I’d have one of those over the new ones but I’m happy with my GTS. Balloon payment goes out at the end of the month then she’s mine.

Insurance has dropped to £450 from last years £600. Road tax is still a bitter pill to swallow at £620 but I’ve only another year of that and then I’ll pay the standard rate.

It’s been a great year. The car has just ticked over 27000 miles and I’ve loved every minute.

Great post, thanks and really helpful insight. Just so I have understood correctly, is that 10% off a new showroom 992.2GTS and £20k off a pre-registered? Sounds a fair deal, which OPC was that? Cheers.

Nice one Dan - March is my expensive month too so I feel your pain...

Hope to see you somewhere this year, be good to have a chat

I'm sure you get out plenty Dan - you're a busy man!

If you're ever at Oulton Park for a race meeting or fancy a random meet up just send me message (y)

Dan,
Thanks for your excellent post.
My local dealer in Newcastle is also offering the same sort of discounts on new and pre-registered 911's. I think I still prefer a Boxster 4.0 GTS.
Steve

Great to hear that you are still enjoying your car Dan.
You’ve done amazingly well on the tyres. My car has now done 28k miles, and I’m on the third set of rear PS4S, and the second set of fronts will need changing this year.
I only paid £1660 for my four year service and MOT so the saving can go to offset the tyres!
I look around a Porsche showroom these days and don’t see anything that I would change my Boxster GTS4.0 for.
