Museum trip and ring trip next year

Afternoon all, after our little jaunt away at the weekend, we thought it would be an idea to go for a small trip to Germany next year taking in the Ring and possibly the Porsche museum. As with so short notice, there are always people that can't go but when there is 9 months, there is no excuse at all!!! Say next June for a long weekend starting on the Thursday night boat for us Northeners arriving home on the Tuesday morning, that would give you the Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday to get to the boat.
The Ring is pretty much on the way to the museum. I know of a good guest house near the Ring in Mullenbach that we have used many times before and would happily go back to. Would need to check for the touristenfahrten days at the RIng to coincide!
Open for discussion but I will put my name down first as going!!!

Ferry from where Al? I suspect that youd be looking at a completely different route to Southern members. Im tempted to go to Hull or Newcastle, but the ferries are so much dearer which more than makes up for the advantage cost-wise.

Any ferry to get to the continent would suffice or the Eurostar for our southern brethren. I would probably go from Newcastle as it is only 2 hours away where Hull is 4 and a bit and probably £50 in petrol at best. The Newcastle ferry also gets you in at about 8am so a good time as well. Rosyth was handy but very expensive.
Anyone any ideas on other activities they would fancy?
Will have a look for suitable dates if people are interested and try and get the wheels in motion?

The Eifel mountains and the Ardennes are pretty much the same place, so youll be very close to Spa too...

Never been to Spa but been past it plenty of times. Baden baden is also very nice.Stopped there for an overnight on the way to Italy. Has an interesting mixed spa with nude communal bathing which was interesting!!!!

I havent been to the new Porsche museum, although Ive been to where it is, and even with James and myself driving Calais to Stuttgart in one day was an absolute pig of a drive. It took all day and there was very little to see (endless dual lane dual carriagway, mostly through forrest).

I'd love to go but unless a miracle happens the car won't be ready in time, perhaps a later trip, I'm hoping to do the Classic Le Man in 2014..

Depends which way you go Simon. There are plenty of scenic routes down the south west of the country and also through France as well. Plenty of options? Where is Ruf located?

Ive done the Calais - Stuttgart drive via Belgium and Luxembourg (to avoid the french toll roads) and whilst is wasnt the most inspiring of drives it was not all that bad either, the earlier you get on the Autobahn the better and that for me was a real hoot.

The museum is a must see for any Porsche nut and I would go back again as the cars often change and get swapped about, with free PCGB entry its a bit rude not to. The owners of the Nordschleife are actually now in receivership and it is unknown what racing is to be held at the venue for 2013, I doubt the tourist days will be affected though, at least I hope not!

just remember you need to be insured to drive TF days, which is getting much harder these days. a good alternative is to hire a swift (don't laugh) although these are probably better if you know the track a bit and can carry momentum through the blind bits

You never had to be insured before, it was just some insurances would not pay out if you had an accident. It is not a closed road, just a toll road!
Alasdair

ok that was the short answer, but it is a huge risk as you have third party liability that is unlimited, and if your insurer won't cover you it's a big problem

Theyll always pay, they cant avoid their third party liability. The problem is that theyll probably try to recover the money from you, which will require some quick and creative thinking in order to keep your house, wife, future, life etc.

well put..

so if you have no assets, or don't mind several years of insurance wrangling with the possibility of losing everything, go ahead...

On my last trip I had a bit of a wake up call with a big spin. Also nearly had a coming together with a gumpert Apollo. One was my fault, the other was not either way the insurance Implacations have put me right off. Quite tempted to go but would prob use a hire car for the ring.

IIRC is it not wise to have some sort of special cover for the 'ring', do they not charge you a small fortune if you have the bad manners to dent their precious Armco barrier? Take a long enough stretch out and you may find that costing more than your cars worth? ...:(
