Modified 944 turbo - taking in too much hot air?

ORIGINAL: A9XXC

Got to watch EMC now - they seen to be playing with all sorts of SIX cylinder cars, including a hairdressers one......[:)]

Nowt wrong with six cylinder hairdresser's cars Mike....they are absolute bargains.

Intercooler is heat soaked, choked and has insufficient cooling airflow.

My recommended solution would.

* Make sure undertrays are fitted (and ideally fit S2/Turbo side skirt trims)

* Vent the bonnet with vents designed to extract air from the engine bay (not the type which collect or scoop)

* Fit an improved intercooler able to flow the correct amount of air for a modified powerplant like yours.

* Make sure the intercooler is sealed to the badge pannel and nose metalwork so air can not flow around the intercooler and is forced through it.

The result will be ...

1. lower engine bay air pressure which will be lower than the air pressure in front of the 924T badge panel vents and so will draw air through the intercooler.

2. Increased charge airflow through the intercooler will reduce intercooler intake to outlet pressure differential, which will reduce charge temperatures pre intercooler as per basic gas law, therefore less thermal work for the intercooler, as well as a turbo which will not have to work as hard, causing lower charge temperatures due to lower turbine speeds.

Not a great deal of money needs to be spent to do all this, and you will notice an improvement in not only engine performance and less performance loss, but also in higher cornering speeds.

*smug & vindicated expression* [:D]

Steady on... this is just getting work done... lets wait until 4th August at Donington before we KNOW it has worked! Don't see why not though [:D]

OK. Feedback time.

EMC fitted a new fibreglass turbo-esque front bumper, ducted air into the intercooler and ducted around the radiator. They removed the cone filter and replaced with a standard turbo air box. the bonnet scoop and badge panel vents are also gone.

The result... full power all day long at Donington. Job sorted. Thanks to all for pointing to this solution.

At the same time I had Gaz Gold dampers fitted and M030 anti roll bars. These proved to be excellent on the track giving good control of the car with the characteristic towards slight understeer. On road they are choppy i.e. you feel every undulation. By no means undriveable and for my use (getting to and fro to tracks) perfectly acceptable but I would not put these on a daily driver. Pic below is me leaning on the suspension hard at the chicane at Donington.

again, thanks to all for the help and guidance. Re-mapping next then hopefully that's it for now!

Cheers

That's excellent - looking good now.... Good to see that the forum works

I bet the car drove so much better on some stiffer springs [:D]

I had a modified 944 Turbo and I would say one of the best places to shop for good upgrades is http://www.lindseyracing.com/LR/Parts/LRMAFKIT.html
They do some real nice stuff ! Also look at cooling the intercooler more , the 968 RS have a vent in the bonnet to allow the air to flow through the intercooler and out to top of the bonnet .

I appreciate Lindsey Racing's enthusiasm for the 944, but I wouldn't unquestioningly accept that their products i] were of suitable quality, or ii] work as claimed. In fact, I regard them in exactly the same way that I do GT Racing.

Some of their products are interesting, some others aren't.

Their customer service is quite good in my experience.

Yup,you have experienced it first hand aswell Mike!Goes well for a fully Laden road car didn't it!?[:D]

That's a great result Mike, and even better in the high ambient temperatures we've been having lately compared with that dank day at Bedford.

The blue meanie rides again [:D]
