Maintenace /servicing costs?

I always compliment the forum old-timers; half the job of keeping the cars on the road, and maintaining their profile, is down to you guys. Just a shame you don't come out to play in the real world more often! Get yourself to the Ace one month and I'll miss my badminton and come along as well. [:)]

Chuff, I'm an old-timer now am I? Amazing how these things creep up on you, and if that's the case then surely it's time I sold the jalopy and moved on to something else ... >ShufflesOffToLookAtAdvertsForCaterham7's< []

I think more miles = less maintenance, as opposed to what might be expected.
In terms of Maintenance£/Mile, without a doubt so. In terms of £/year, I suspect this may be true as well. 944's never take well to not being driven; when I was doing 12,000 miles a year in my S2 she ran beautifully well, started on the button every time, pulled hard and drove very cleanly. Since she has dropped back to doing 5,000 miles a year she doesn't run quite as sweetly - more's the pity. I really do need to drive her more.

Like Paul, I've also spent a fair chunk on mine since getting it in July 2010. I've just totted it up and it comes to around £7,500 since then. Wow, I guess i'd been too terrified to add it all up till now! I should point out I have no place to work on a car and limited mechanical skills, so have to resort to using specialists for servicing.

It turns out I've spent roughly £4,700 the first year and £2,800 the second. So buying the right car would appear to be key.

July 12 2010 bought the car
Sept 9 2010 1190 new radiator, caster mounts, suspension bushings, wheel bearings
Oct 23 2010 72 maintenance set - plugs, filters...
Nov 18 2010 1777 Steering U joint, belts, water pump, reseal engine, oil change, many other odds & ends
April 26 2011 1014 Front discs, pads, sensors, brake fluid change, replace gearbox oil
May 5 2011 59 DME relay
May 20 2011 570 Clutch master & Slave cylinders, fuel check valve
Year 1 total £4682

July 18 2011 762 Oil & filter change, thermostat, repair heater system, replace window regulator, heated rear window repair
Sept 20 2011 1177 Rear discs & pads, hand brake, power steering pump, MOT, replace locks (I managed to lose both keys in 1 week!)
May 21 2012 344 oil & filter change, replace fan switch, new bonnet struts
July 18 2012 544 track down hot start issue, replace both ignition sensors
Year 2 total £2827

I should add that the shops I've used (RPM Technik and Ninex) have sorted many other niggles while they were in there. Right now it feels like one very sorted car. It's absolutely lovely to drive, so I don't really regret spending the money. I do regret not spending more time asking questions on the forum and going to Porsche events and looking at 944s. I jumped at the first one that looked pretty good and later found it had been sitting unused for a while. As several people have said, 944s seem to respond well to being driven regularly. Mines driven every day and I can't think of any car for similar money I'd rather have.

Like Oli I too keep a record of all my S2 spending on the Pistonead blog

http://www.pistonheads.com/members/showServiceHistory.asp?carId=6921

Over 14 years and 112,000 miles she has cost me £15500 in servicing, repairs and tyres so that works out to circa £1100 a year

Some years she costs under £500, some years its over £2000 and that includes all the major expensive items like belts, chains, pumps, fuel lines, shocks etc. If you own these cars long term then they average out very favourably indeed IMHO. Trouble is a lot of people buy an 'average' car for around £4-5000 then jump ship as soon as they get the first big bill
