Losing coolant, think I know why.

Well, noticed the level dropped a bit, so topped up, it barely moved but it was going somewhere, noticed (its an S2) that there was pink residue on the metal hose junction thingy on the fornt of the engine, the allooy corrodes and instead of white its pinkish which suggests thats the location. I changed the PAS belt today as it was slipping which was a faff as the tensioner was seized but it gave me chance to root around and have a look and there was wetness down there.

Anyway, took it for a spin to check the PAS belt was ok, got a little bit of steam, got home popped the bonnet and again, wetness, I prodded around and I moved the hose coupler, the black plastic one to the alloy houssing that goes back to the header tank and out pops a sprinkle of finest Porsche coolant.

So, pound to a penny have found the leak but why would it be coming from there, every time I move the pipe it will let some out, so,heat, pressure and engine movement must be letting some out, not much but dont want any coming out. the union between the plastic and the allow doesnt appear to have a gasket of any sort, should it ?

Anyone come across this before, I tried to tighten it but it doesnt look like it was loose.

I was concerned it might be headgasket or something but I am hoping this is a simple fix.
 
Do you mean the plastic elbow on the front of the water pump? It has two allen head bolts holding it on. If it is there is an o ring recessed into it that maybe needs changing.
 
Yep, thats the fella, so find the part number for the o ring, drop the coolant and replace the o ring ?

Wierd it would be leaking, will try and find a diagram so I can get it straight what is going on.

Thinking its fairly easy to fix and nothing sinister., having owned a Rover BRM, a waft of coolant terrifies me !
 
Plastic elbow is a common problem area.They are not expensive,so just buy a new one and pop it on.End of problem!!!!
 
Totally agree. Because they are plastic they can quite often warp. If changing the thermostat always change the plastic elbow also as they are often warped and will leak if re-used. This may have been the case. You can get a new one with the O ring for a few pounds.

Buy both! for all they cost much safer.also replace the cap head bolts for new ones as they tend to chew after they have been in and out a few times.
 
I would try Porsche mate first. For small parts like that they are quite often the cheapest. If you don't have a local Porsche OPC then I hear Exeter are very good. Give them a ring. A small part like that they will nomally pop in the post. Other than that all the usual suspects. Frazerpart, Promax, Design 911 or perhaps even Porsche Shop if you really have to.

How come it has two thermostats, the main big one (3) and the smaller one (5), not seen that before ?
 
You have an S2 so yours doesn't have another thermostat. The diagram you are looking at is for the Turbo. This has an extra cooling circuit for the turbocharger. That is what the additional, smaller thermostat is for.
 
Mine looks like that diagram, that elbow is where its leaking from, the pipe returns to the header tank, if I move the pipe forward I get coolant spray out, it does it if I brkae hard, am going to order the bits, think the elbow is the same, as is the co ring but it doesnt have the stat.

Cheers Rob, one less thing to think about buying.

Any tips on changing it, I guess I will have to top up the coolant, want to avoid any air locks.

Ran it for an hour in traffic today for the first time, it was fine, think with old cars, with bigger engines you are more aware of the engine than in smaller or more modern cars, plus there are more gausges to watch, temp sits at the bottom of the middle range and goes up to nearer the top of middle until I guess the fans cut in and it goes back, always a bit worried with older cars and traffic but it seems fine, just kept going between those marks and no steam from the leaky connector, think its a trickle unless I brake really hard and the G force swings the pipe forward, which acts as a lever, can simulate that manually.

Will order the bits today.
