My mechanic says it is out of true by 0.3mm and if we skim it may be touch and go whether we can torque it down enough to take the banana out sufficiently to not bind the cam shafts - plus he says finding a head would be less expensive.

That’s a ridiculous amount of money for a simple job. Call Alastair at AMAC Engineering in Northallerton, North Yorks and tell him I sent you.
Get it skimmed 0.3mm so it’s level and stick a thicker Athena head gasket on there from Partbox to keep the timing right.
Machine shop is chatting absolute rubbish that it will bind the camshafts, the individual bearing caps set the tension on them.

I am not speaking directly to the machine shop. So I guess I need to challenge my mechanic's report of 'machine shop' price. Now you have challenged me to interrogate here is what Copilot estimates:

Not saying it's the case here, but I've heard of alloy heads warping. Easy enough to tell, if the cams are already tight.

I just had my head skimmed, a 3ltr head. It cost me £40, took about 20mins while I waited (noting that I had stripped it all etc). If you're anywhere near Crawley happy to share his details... he took off 9thou which is roughly 0.229mm just to remove corrosion. No signs of warping...

Dear Phil. What an attractive proposition! N14 polar opposite 
Labour for me also includes a bunch of additional stuff to fix whatever caused the overheat in the first place - possibly a sensor wired wrong has been suggested. Replace rad and a fan. Maybe water pump. I like the DIY idea and have a couple of sons who would be interested to help but right now I want Spyros' knowledge. Although he can be a PITA he knows his stuff and knows the 944 like no one else who has worked on it for me before (and probably caused the problems!)
