Late 924S - Info needed

Hi folks,
I'm in the market for a daily driver, and I've been asking some questions about 944's on the 944 forum, and it has come up that the late 924S is pretty much the same mechanically as the early 944.
Assuming this is true, which would be the better daily driver. A late 924S (1988 ?) or an early 944 (1983/1984) , and why ?
I thought I'd better ask the experts !

Also, I'm told there was a change to the 2.5 engine in later years from 150 to 160hp .. When did this happen, and how can you tell which engine is which ?

Also, what sort of moeny are we talking about for an "average" condition 924S ?

and lastly, can you folks point me in the direction of some good late 924S's for sale ?

Thanks for any help.
Declan

Background :
I bought my first ever Porsche, (a '75 911 2.7) back in July, and I've been bitten by the Porsche bug. As its not really practical to drive that one every day, I'm trying to sell my current daily driver, a '97 Honda CR-V, to fund purchase of a Porsche. I started looking at 944's as a friend has one, and they seem a good drive, and the helpful folks on the 944 forum gave me some good pointers. Since my budget is quite low, someone suggested a 924S as an alternative.

Well, you know my view [:D]

Late engine numbers should have JN..... numbers I think (I can check that later). And yes, mine does.......

Phil

PS, I followed yiour Honda 'sale' with interest. I assume you'll be sending a large foreign currency cheque and would like the 'excess' returned in cash? Also, I'm afraid my 924S is not as well equipped in the 'security' features as the CR-V. That was one hilarious read.

I wonder why I never got any more replies from the "buyer" [;)]

I did have another quick attempt at the the same thing, where they offered me 16k instead of 10k asking (where I advertised at 8k !) so I just told them that "yes, I will accept 16k". No reply to that one yet either !

Nearly 10 years ago I was faced with the same dilemma. 924S vs 944. I chose the 924S because of a slightly softer suspension, power steering which made it an easier car to deal with as a daily use vehicle. Also I thought my wife would probably prefer those differences too and therefore put up fewer reasons why the money would be better spent on something else. currently in the Trading Post there is a 1987 924S with 100k for a smidgin under 3k, and comparing with the 944s there, it seems the 924S is still the cheaper option. I daresay a look around autotrader.co.uk will also show some comparisons

Yep, the 924S does seem to be the cheaper option, and the power steering would be an attractive difference for SWMBO.
From what I can see from online ads, etc there is about 700 to 800 squids in the difference.
(Thats not having seen any of these in the flesh, so it could be that the 924S's are in much better condition, or vice-versa)

Have you ever regretted your decision to go the 924S route, or in hindsight wa sit the right way to go for you ?

Cheers,
Declan

You don't see a rusty 924, any model.
The other attractions are purity of line and, in the case of the 'S', something just a little different.

Never regretted the choice, but then I've never driven a 944 to see the difference. I bought mine from Hartech, who have driven many of both and (bearing mind I was a prospective buyer), and their opinion at the time was that for the longer drive the 924S was the better car. Certainly I think that the 924S vs 944 is a choice made from personal preference. the oval dash 944s would almost certainly produce much more of a differential.
