Is there a repalcement for the ashtray, thats more useful?

Hi,

After playing about with my mobile phone and blue tooth head unit this morning i realised that streaming my music from the phone was a better option for me than playing the SD card in the head unit. The phone navigates the music collection better, sounds better (I was surprised by that), has an 8 band equaliser, displays more useful information about the track and can take 32GB cards, whereas the head unit is limited to 4GB.

Next question, where to put the phone?

I don't like those clamps that you fix to the dashboard. I was thinking about a recess unit that replaces the ashtray (I don't smoke). i found this:

Has anyone come across something better, or at least supplied from within the UK?

Ill second that, infact i took a spare ashtry apart and planned having it shot blasted to make clean and paint black , leaving top of to make a cubbie hole likethis company sells

I converted the ashtray into a parrot 3100 control unit holder.

Pleased with the result.

The process involved:

Remove ashtray from car
Carefully slide the plastic top section from the Pressed steel tray
Remove and discard the sliding ashtray lid
Carefully cut the (left side) fixed top section from the Plastic top section
Blend the cut to match the (right side) open section
Drill a rear facing hole in the metal tray (to pass the parrott cable & plug thru)
Deburr the hole
Satin black paint on the Tray inside
Refit the lid carefully (it slides back into place
Pass the Parrott cable thru the hole
Attach the Controller with 2 sided tape

I can text you an image of the result if you are interested.

I got fed up of mine being dirty and looking crappy looking. So I took mine out sanded it down, sprayed it black and lacquered and added a bit of rubber matt. Use it as a coin n garage key slot now but have been tempted to get another and cut away the top carefully and make something like that.

Thanks bud, think that was three layers of paint and 3 layers of lacquer, initially needing a wire brush then sanding down.
Really does make a noticeable difference though when its in the car. Just a shame about the few cigarette burn marks around the edges of my surround.

George,

I've emailed you my mobile number, I'd be very pleased to see your modified ashtray. Pm's haven't been working for me lately, so please let me know if you've not received it.

Thanks
Paul

I'd like to see the images too please.

Anyone fancy a group buy on the US replacement pictured?

Just make your own.

Remove the top off ash tray from the metal base.

Cut the sliding lid back 2 the shape off inside off the ashtray.

Using the plastic tray that phone or I pod came boxed in fix 2 underside off ashtray lid.

Put back in ashtray place.

Yeah, but if you hack your ashtray around then where do you stuff your sweet wrappers and old parking tickets?

Am I the only one who still uses it as a bin?

Well, I live in somewhere called "the country", where we are still allowed to park without paying, so the odd parking ticket, if I have to venture in to the concrete jungle, is easy to stick in my pocket.

I don't tend to eat sweets, and the ash tray is too small to fit a kebab wrapper in, so useless there as well. :p

I'm going to pop some self adhesive closed cell sponge rubber in mine, 0.5mm or 1mm thick from memory. I'll see how that works out and post the results if anyone is interested?

Dunc.

Edited to say it's only closed cell because that's what I've got here, it doesn't need to be water proof!

I might be being a bit stupid here....[8|]

I have a Nokia N8 I use as a music player with it's built-in FM transmitter, and a Galaxy S3 that does sat-nav etc. How is this going to fit both, let alone any other possible phones lie, for instance, that silly i-phone thing?

I've got the proper tray to replace the armrest, and I can categorically say that a phone needs to be better secured. They sit fine under the stereo, but unless the ash tray option is designed to securely hold your specific phone then save your money!

I have an iPod, and iPod Touch and an iPhone and only the phone came in one of those vacuum formed trays. Unfortunately It isn't the phone that I want to mount.
