On this very forum we have people with the skills to A) Create a 3d CAD model, B) Create a rapid prototyped/rapid manufactured component from that design.
If there is an agreement about what the perfect ash-tray replacement might be... or at least make a couple of suggestions, I'll happily create the 3d CAD model, and if the member of the forum with the rapid prototyping/manufacture capabilities isn't interested in making however many, I am sure I can find a company that will be!
Ironic that I find my ash tray relatively useful for storing petrol reciepts, with the caveat that it is damned awkward to fish them out when they jam themselves up under the non-sliding bit!
Also don't forget the ashtray should be illuminated...

I have an iPod, and iPod Touch and an iPhone and only the phone came in one of those vacuum formed trays. Unfortunately It isn't the phone that I want to mount.
Did you look on e bay, there is often empty boxes for sale on there.
I've had the bluetooth enabled head unit for a couple of years. It works well with voice dial, so well I never use the popular numbers that I've saved on the head unit. Call quality is perfectly good via the microphone and door speakers.
It was only when i upgraded my phone (Nokia 6700 slide - I know that's really old, you should have seen the previous phone i used) that i decided to stream via bluetooth. The phones player interface and storage capacity is better than the that of the head unit. Its graphic equaliser is useful too.
The blue tooth bit rate is slightly higher than my MP3's, its about 200kbps, so in theory streaming should not reduce the sound quality. In practise I found the same track sounds better streamed off the phone than played from an SD card in the head unit.
When I next drop the face plate from the head unit of my daily driver and break it, I'll be going the streaming route there as well.
Haven't tried extended listening, but i suspect the phones battery will take a hammering. It wouldn't be hard to buy an in car charger, dissemble it and solder it into the cars harness and feed the plug into the modified ashtray though.

the parrot connects to an iphone which is not too bad battery wise, but on a long journey gets connected to a charger lead in the centre armrest.
I will not pretend to understand the streaming rate stuff, it cuts the radio if a call comes in and the lead will reach the dash for sat nav purposes.
it works[
good luck with your plans

I have 3d printers but I'm not sure the materials would be suitable enough for that job. May be better off making a basic vac former from a vacuum cleaner and a hair dryer and 3d printing a tool as the material will be more suitable and the finish on the parts will be much better with different colour options...it'll also be MUCH cheaper! I've 3d printed many parts for mine and have always had to hide them away or spend hours finishing them! If you provide the CAD file I'm happy to prep it for printing and work out the most cost effective way of doing it!

I've 3D printed parts in materials ranging from Silicone to titanium so it's all do-able if you're prepared to pay! I even make prosthetic body parts on mine! For people that is, not the car! [
