Iffy starting

My car has always started easily but last couple of days it seems reluctant, sort of hovers a 300 rpm and then dies, eventually catches, is this DME issues or something else ?
 
It could be any number of things Mark, but the first diagnostic step is to buy a new DME relay (for about £20-odd). You should always have a spare so its never wasted expenditure.

After thatd Id suspect that it was the FPR, as theyre getting as likely to fail now. Unfortunately the FPR for the S2 is unique and more expensive, so its not as easy to buy just to see...

Cheers Simon, DME ordered off Ebay, was long overdue to get one !

Feels kind of fueling related though, will see whether changing the DME helps first and then work through it.
 
The DME relay is one outer case, with two relays inside it. The first powers up the ECU/DME off the ignition switch, and the second is activated by the DME when the engine is cranking at a set (low, obviously) speed.

This is why the cars always take a second or two to start up, as the second relay in the 'DME relay' powers up the fuel pump only when the engine is cranking sufficiently quickly.

Its possible that either relay in the 'DME relay' can start to play up or fail completely, so the symptoms can suggest either a ignition or fuel fault.
