I bought some s/h KWv3 suspension...

Quick update - I got home early today so had a chance to get underneath & look at the rust

Not too bad I think - front suspension mount for the o/s/r is completely shot, the other might need a little attention, small repair to the very bottom of one front wing needed, n/s sill looks ok, o/s sill a couple of bubbles, so may need the paint stripping to see what's going on but both look OK from the inside at the front - view from the bungs in passenger / drivers footwells is clean.

Engine bay is a bit cruddy - lots of surface corrosion on the block / intake manifold, brake servo rusty - what's the best thing to clean up aluminium? (Andy Moss suggested a jetwash) Lots of nasty oily residue at the base of the oil filler & all around that area of the engine & what looks like some streaks of coolant under the n/s of the car. It looks like a more straightforward car to work on than the 944 turbo - lots more space (famous last words probably..)

Split rims will definitely need a refurb - the lacquer is gone on all 4.

Off to see the bodyshop tomorrow...

16" cups are lighter than D90s as I have both in the garage and weighed them.

The cups are for sale though, sent you an email Ed.

Welcome back, WD40 is pretty good as an initial cleaner for powdery aluminium, rub it in with a bit of scotchbrite,
Tony

993 16in Cups are also a good shout - very light and unloved by many so you can pick them up cheaply. Good luck with the car - some nice bits and pieces there.

The bodyshop (didn't see that my phone had autocorrected to "bookshop" [] ) man thinks we'll be ok .... Although he has still reserved his final opinion until we take the paint off.

Booked in for march 12, so I won't be doing much with the car before then. Might get a chance to do a bit of a clean up & attack the interior.

I'll take some pics & start a project thread....

Just got a quote for the split rim refurb - £150 per wheel + VAT!! [:(] With a bit of welding to repair 2 of the rims that will take it to near £800.

I don't think it makes sense to keep them - can't see them being very brake dust friendly. But would they fetch £1000+ refurbed, powder coated, with tyres?

I'm open to suggestions ....

Well you could sell me the wing mirrors to kick start the refurb fund[;)]

They will be up for sale once the car is back from the bodyshop - so late March. Will go nicely with the 968 handles... [:D]

Exploring cheaper refurb options for the wheels - may not be a perfect job, but still decent nonetheless. My first problem is getting the damn things off! The locking wheelnut key cracked on me as the rear nut was on too tight [:(] So i still have 3 nuts to remove.

Apologies for going OT a bit, but did I miss what happened with the Civic? I know you had engine troubles, did they get resolved and do you still own it?

Was going ok in December -

Thanks Mike [:D]

I have subsequently fitted a central bonnet catch as the f/g bonnet was lifting as you can see in the pic above. The car is a bit tidier since you last saw it I think Peter.

I haven't had engine problems, but have had another gearbox failure - diff bearings again.[:(] I've now fitted a newly rebuilt close ratio box from an integra dc2, which tops out around 125-130 @ 8k. the LSD makes a big difference in the corners!

I also fitted new, very expensive driveshafts (from the US, no shafts available in the UK), and new Gaz suspension (Ledas too old to be rebuildable). I've just stuck on a new manifold and stainless exhaust. I'm hoping to get to Oulton on Friday with circuit days if I can get enough work done today & tomorrow.

I was hoping to go racing with it this year, but still can't quite justify the ££. I'm keeping the car for now, as I've found some storage, and it will be a couple of months before the S2 is ready. It should be due for a first trip out at Anglesey on May 25th (Javelin, if anyone's interested - £129 or possibly cheaper as we're waiting on a group discount). I've decided that actually if I want to race in the future, it doesn't have to be in that car, so am less concerned about keeping it in the long term.

If all goes well with the S2 build, I should be able to sell the Honda and the huge pile of spares I have accumulated for close on what the S2 is costing me. The Honda is a great car, but it's not a 944.... (it might be quicker though). I'm in no rush to sell, and it might be a fairly small pool of buyers out there for a 20 year old ex works racecar. Would go well in CSCC Future Classics I think, maybe not so competitive in Tintops

It's an excuse to put some pics in anyway...

Thanks Ed, it must have been the gearbox I was thinking of. Great to hear you've still got it, and I'd have thought that an ex works car would be a slowly appreciating asset, so a good reason to keep it [;)] It is looking much prettier than I last saw it (although I liked its battle scars) but now it's the fastest colour, so that helps a lot. Are you not tempted to put its last livery back onto it?

Anglesey is rather tempting, but probably a bit early for me, but I really want to tick it off the list this year if I can.

If anyone can find me any justification that one day it'll be worth something, I'll be very happy [:D]
