How long can you spend...

...doing a simple job? I think I have spent the best part of a day just to put a set of wheels on a car... But the wheel nuts are cleaned, painted where necessary, wheels studs cleaned, greased, wheels waxed inside and out, labels removed from new tyres, and wheel protectant applied... Nevertheless... I'm not going to make it into an F1 pit crew!

A whole set! Nick would take that long to clean one wheel. So why the sudden need to get all concours minded, or is it to save embarrassment at workers conference?

Oh that wasn't cleaning the wheels - this was just fitting the set refurbished by Silver Wheels! No, not going all Concours for worker's conference - that will be graced by Bomber in "working condition" - no, this is preparing for Dinslaken... Mit mein gelben Auto.

Anyway, I thought you were the king of wheel-cleaning Geoff; how long did you spend on the wheels of your old car before you passed it to Kevin?

My argument is this is "protective and preventative maintenance" rather than obsessive polishing... and don't forget, we know the time you have spent on various jobs on your car Paul... you're in this too![:D] What was your record?

I started using this stuff a few years back on the race car:
http://www.halfords.com/motoring/car-cleaning/shampoo-polish-wax/meguiars-wash-wax-anywhere

I think I have only wet washed that car maybe twice in 5 years. Properly lazy and fast but unfortunately been through a few bottles of that stuff.

Tref I found nothing helps getting stuck wheels off better than an air or electric driver, on mine whacking torque into each nut for a few seconds each does nothing to move them but it seems to break em free enough to make it easy to just loosen with a bar.

Never really had a problem with stuck wheels, but then I have always used grease or copperplate on studs and nuts. Only thing I did find that on cars with wheel bolts rather than studs and nuts that copperslip would combine with brake dust and clog threads, where as conventional grease didn't, so I am in the habit of using grease now. I still clean the studs though... And that is why I ended up spending so much time today. It is a nice feeling though when you put the wheel nut on, and it is easily turned by fingertips all the way down, and just needs nipping up to torque at the end of the travel! [:)]

The longest job on the resto which took 8mths was the removal of 1 rear lense retaining screw 11hrs and a new pair of mininmole grips

Ouch! That takes some beating! I think I would have reached for the drill (or was that removing the remains after already drilling the head off?)
