Help ! cant get reverse !

I doubt that even the original shift parts and linkages are 'plug n play' and required hand fitting and adjusting by the Porsche techs

A pattern part is going to need the same level of attention to detail.

If the parts are made to the correct tolerence then it must either be that
1. you haven't fitted it properly [;)]
2. the car's geometry has been damaged in an accicent
3. the new linkage components are faulty

can't think of anything else that could effect shifting other than wear in the box and internal linkage

The thing about short throw shifts is that they are short throw ! so fitting tolerances I presume will need to be even better than they were for the original part for the gear shifting to be adequate. Any excess movement or wear must be eliminated .

My old 89 S2 will rarely go into reverse gear these days. I invariably need to drive her forward a couple of feet in order to get into reverse. have you tried putting the gearbox in forth say and pushing it forward a few feet to move all the gear dogs a little ?

I also had to adjust where the shift lever was positioned as well to get it perpendicular to the tunnel. I found the locating bolts to be another area of play and its hard to feel whether its properly located or not.

It needs the belts doing, so I may just throw it in and see what happens, have tried every combination and adjustment I can think of now, there is alocal specialist that said he would do the belts, a chap called Tony Greatorex, will give him a ring tomorrow it seemed so simple, just remove one bit and put another on, it shouldnt be this difficult. Might get the Headgasket done as well, due to the leak from the back of the engine, any idea how much that and the belts should cost, I was thinking about £600 - £800 ?

Dont think the car has ever been in a bump

I am wondering if something is amiss in the box now but would like to try a standard linkage again but getting hold of one is proving difficult.

Not sure if I fitted it wrongly but it seems difficult to get it wrong, three bolts and only one has any adjustment.

Will have a check and make sure the locating bols are spot on in their holes, was really convinced the grommets were making the difference.

Anyone got a standard linkage for sale or know of one.

I dont normally get beaten by anything and its winding me up !

Mark, I had belt and balance, no rollers and it had a recent water pump. As well as this they replaced the leaking front seal and I was quoted £300 or £350 plus VAT, max.

I can recommend a firm who are at the end of the A628 on the other side of Barnsley. Not on your doorstep but only half an hours drive away and their prices will more than make it worthwhile.

Theyre ex-Porsche factory trained (JCT600 OPC Sheffield) and theyre also the indie that Jon Mitchell recommends in the North of the country. Id go they if they were twice as far away as they are from you.

Im confident that theylll be able to tyweak your shifter and have it working in short order.

Last ditch attempt before it going in for someone more qualified to do it, have got a second hand linkage on the way. I cant face workign on it at the moment, I cycled home tonight and it rates a perhaps the coldest I have ver felt in my life, techincally female for half an hour earlier.

Let me know anyway - theyd be my first choice for a cam & balance, even if I was unfortunate enough to live in Lancashire! [:D]

ahhhhh ..................so you'll be another one of those Bankers then [;)][:D]

Got a "new" linkage waiting for me when I get back from a work related trip to Aberdeen, £35 from Porsche apart, worth a try, as for the bonus, nothing to get excited about but a few quid to sort it out if needs be, my worry is that I need to drop the gearbox and that me trying to get the old one off somehow damaged the selector forks in the gearbox, not sure how it works but dont think it would be user serviceable in there !

not very likely I shouldn't have thought but I've never had a 944 box apart .

You should be able to engage reverse gear by hand with the linkage disconnected whilst someone is rocking the car back and forward I should have thought .but it might need a pit or ramp to get at the gearbox to do it ?

good luck anyway.

Just got back off the old BE 1036 and had a nicely packaged box of old Porsche tat from Porche Apart and I have to say the one they have sent looks in fine fettle, so thats saturday mornings job.

What was the full delivered price please Mark? I might give Buttercup a call for something similar for my own car. Any chance of a photo too?
