A pattern part is going to need the same level of attention to detail.
If the parts are made to the correct tolerence then it must either be that
1. you haven't fitted it properly [
2. the car's geometry has been damaged in an accicent
3. the new linkage components are faulty
can't think of anything else that could effect shifting other than wear in the box and internal linkage
The thing about short throw shifts is that they are short throw ! so fitting tolerances I presume will need to be even better than they were for the original part for the gear shifting to be adequate. Any excess movement or wear must be eliminated .
My old 89 S2 will rarely go into reverse gear these days. I invariably need to drive her forward a couple of feet in order to get into reverse. have you tried putting the gearbox in forth say and pushing it forward a few feet to move all the gear dogs a little ?

Dont think the car has ever been in a bump
I am wondering if something is amiss in the box now but would like to try a standard linkage again but getting hold of one is proving difficult.
Not sure if I fitted it wrongly but it seems difficult to get it wrong, three bolts and only one has any adjustment.
Will have a check and make sure the locating bols are spot on in their holes, was really convinced the grommets were making the difference.
Anyone got a standard linkage for sale or know of one.
I dont normally get beaten by anything and its winding me up !

I can recommend a firm who are at the end of the A628 on the other side of Barnsley. Not on your doorstep but only half an hours drive away and their prices will more than make it worthwhile.
Theyre ex-Porsche factory trained (JCT600 OPC Sheffield) and theyre also the indie that Jon Mitchell recommends in the North of the country. Id go they if they were twice as far away as they are from you.
Im confident that theylll be able to tyweak your shifter and have it working in short order.

my worry is that I need to drop the gearbox and that me trying to get the old one off somehow damaged the selector forks in the gearbox, not sure how it works but dont think it would be user serviceable in there !
not very likely I shouldn't have thought but I've never had a 944 box apart .
You should be able to engage reverse gear by hand with the linkage disconnected whilst someone is rocking the car back and forward I should have thought .but it might need a pit or ramp to get at the gearbox to do it ?
good luck anyway.
I now have a reverse gear and a full selection of forwards ones, Porsch Aparts 35 quid second hand linkage has saved me after several weeks of skinned knuckles and dicking about under there, can put the car back and get it whizzed in for a Cambelt.
gearchange feels lovely now and I dont feel quite as much of a clueless pillock.
Thansk for all the suggestions, you dont want to see us in Ladies clothes really, do you ?
