Chaps, have installed my short shifter and can get all the gears apart from reverse, any ideas ?

Got to be adjustment Mark. Have you referred to Clarks and to the factory manuals? Id be surprised if both didnt cover it, with Clarks being a more practical 'how to'.

Went for a drive and I quite like hoe it feels, cant seem to dial out the lack of reverse, goign to come back to it tomorrow

Found this, someone having the same issue,

I, like this guy replaced the rubber bushes on the support,

http://www.944online.com/cgi-bin/forum/forum.cgi?board=944-2;action=display;num=1257620089

the exisitjng ones were soft and gooey, so thought replacing them with some new grommets was the thing to do, dont want to put the old ones back, can the bushes be sourced from somewhere ?

Which short shifter is on the gearbox or gearstick? I found that my eurocup gt gearstick replacement needed a lot of modification to allow me to move the linkage far enough back. And that my rear linkage sometime became loose at the point where it entered the link from the gearstick and the bolt holding lever onto the gearbox shaft. As for the one with the rubber grommets i put it roughle central and it worked fine

Also out of interest if you want to replace that item with the rubber grommets ive ordered the parts to make a new one as shown in this method http://944foot2thefloor.blogspot.co.uk/2009/12/how-to-fit-short-shift-shifter-linkage.html?m=1
The track rod ends come as a kit of two so can make one up for anyone whos interested

Duffman,

It is this I put on

So, Gearbox eng, the front shifter is ok, very little play

Going to make a list of stuff to try ready for next weekend.

Going to get some flexible ratchet spanners, to get at that bolt that holds the support on, utter pig to get at.

I replaced the grommets with the nearest size from my box of grommets, difficult to tell as the old ones were swollen and mis-shapen, not sure whether perhaps now there is not enough movement, aside fromt he grommets on the support, what else is there, I have one grommet either side of the bat at each end but not sure if there should be a washer, the diagram seems to show one but it is so blurry, not sure if that would make the difference, not sure how tight i need to do the locknut up on the adjuster, too slack it will move, too stiff and it compresses the grommets.

Thats the schnell item that i have litterally just put on today not got my track rods yet to make the support so have the original one on it.
To get reverse i put the box in first and pushed the bracket as far to the left as it would go then tightened it with a small washer either side.
As far as i could tell the grommets are more of a flexible dust cover because it bolts up to a stop on the support.
Its all good now so hopefully that should sort it for you

Cheers, just to clarify, put the gear lever in first, with the adjustment at the gearbox end undone and the tighten that up so the bolt is at the limit of its travel to the left, ie away from the gearbox side ?

Sorry looking from the back of the car tighten the bolt so it is as far right in the slot as it will go.
I tried both ways and this gave enough travel

That 17 mm bolt on top of the gearbox is easy meat now, Halfords flexible ratchet spanners are now mine !

Weirdly, she does, was in the garage chopping a bit of wood up to mount some wood for a new blind in the bathroom, she was sweating and panting, eyes bulging which led me to beleive that a really blunt junior hacksaw (blunted on my gear linakage) was possibly not the best tool for cutting wood, three strokes with a decent "wood" (Clue is in the name ladies) saw would have it done, if men died out how would they survice, one rumour of a decetn sized spider would render the country unihabitable for them, obviously, it works the other way as well.

Ok, still not working, any suggestions ?

Might put a standard shifter back on, anyone got a good s/h one for sale ?

Not sure that the Schell shofter doesnt foule on the gearbox casing.

Might buy a Nissan 300 ZX instead :)

I have a little theory having pondered it out, the new shifter is tried and tested so should be fine, the other thing I changed were the grommets on the support bar for some from my box of Grommets as they had that look of ancient, oil contaminated spongy rubber, i.e. 21 years worth of use, so the ones I changed them for were approximately the same size but looking at this link from Rose Passion new ones look like they are much spongier than the ones I put on so potentially the support bar doesnt have the required range of motion to allow the selector to go into reverse.

Great site but they wanted 30 euro for four rubber grommets, luckily I retained the old ones and I have Porsche 2 miles away in case they are screwed.

Migth try the Rose jointed support bar I made again as that as well woudl allow a greater range of motion.

Hope thats it, cant see what else it would be, want to use it again !

never a truer word J4CKO.[;)]

I have been dry lining ,ahem, (spider-proofing ) my shed for a few weeks now . Yesterday I removed a small panel to adjust it so that even the tiniest spider couldn't gain access and there sitting in the middle of the nice warm insulation , I swear looking at me with a big grin, was the biggest spider I've ever seen in my life.

Luckily for me, K was within shouting distance, or god knows how long I would have been trapped in the shed .[:D]

She may not know which cap to remove to put the oil in the engine but I'd saw her wood any day.
