Head unit/cd player

Hi all, has anyone found a reasonably priced head unit in keeping with the 944's interior? I have tried 2. A pioneer and a sony but both look like chavved up boy racer offerings with bright blue lights etc. I'm after something with sub out and ideally usb input too.

Thanks

Craig

I put a Blaupunkt San Francisco 300 into mine about two years ago. Does everything I want and looks acceptably sober and Germanic.

Unfortunately it appears they have replaced that with the 310 which looks a lot more video-gamey, but you might find some old stock knocking about.

Not quite what you want, but I've just put a Becker CDR-22 (the original radio) into my Boxster & connected a 3.5mm jack for aux-in. ÂŁ7.99 for the cable.

I think there are lots of Blaupunkt and Beckers of that era and earlier that have an aux input (usually used for CD changer) - use for ipod or phone music. USB not so easy although Solisto may have an option.

Can't think there will be much suitable for a 944 from today's radios - they are all too garish! PH sportscars have loads of old radios kicking about - that's where I got mine from (at half the price they are on ebay). Don't bother ringing them though as they don't have any idea what they have - the only option is go there & have a root around.

I have a Pioneer headunit (can't remember what model) but like a lot of the semi decent spec pioneers they have the option to allow you to choose what colour (LOTS to choose from) you want it the buttons and the screen. Ive put mine to orange buttons and an orange screen and doesnt look overly out of place (still does a bit though obviously) now it matches the interior lights, unlike when I first put it in and it was white buttons and screen to match my previous car.

I've put a Clarion FB 289RBT in my 944. The central volume knob is the same size and proportions as the those on the heater unit above. Its quite restrained in appearance, but thoroughly modern in features. Bluetooth telephone interface, iPod compatible, plays from SD card, streams via bluetooth.

Only problem, they discontinued it. However i bet there's still some around if you search the net.

I've got a Dayton VDO 4300RS with built in Sat Nav which looks right in the 944.

There's a seller on eBay has some new old stock for sale [:)]

Any of you coming along to Rutland? If it isn't peeing with rain - would be good to have a look at a few options in the flesh.

ORIGINAL: rav

Becker Grand Prix ready and waiting for my next 944 turbo.

IMO probably one of the few HUs that look great in a 944. I shall pulling the faithful Mexico Pro out of the daily to put into the '51.

Are you coming up to Rutland Rav?

Beckers are a good choice (OE fit in modern Porsches as well). Nakamichi always used to be pretty low-key too, and sounded good.

I have a DAB Blaupunkt which I rate very highly. No USB input but it does have a SD card slot and a facility for 2.5mm jack input - and I have built a 2.5mm jack socket in my armrest storage so can plug music in there if I want to. Having said that, the DAB is superb and I listen to that most of the time.

Hi Oli,

what Aerial did you need for the DAB unit? Is it an easy install?

Craig,

Making DAB aerials is very easy and I made one for pennies from an old bit of TV co-ax cable and some connectors of the right type. It runs behind the glovebox and the working bit is in the passenger side A-pillar. It picks up all the multiplexes you'd ever need (and several more) and reception has yet to drop out on me in the UK.

Here's a piccie of the radio:

... and of the jack input socket I made in the arm rest. (The knurled bit is a plug which is plugged into the pocket, and you can see the TRRS plug on the end of the wire, designed to go into a mobile 'phone.)

Found the unit I have in mine unfortunately a link to halfords as that where I bought it from;

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_869019_langId_-1_categoryId_165474

As said all the colours can be changed mines changed to orange, tried to take a picture of it this mourning when I left work but my phone doesnt pick it up all that well but here it is;

It is a little brighter than the heater unit and that but not as glaringly bright as the picture makes it look.

Thanks all for the suggestions. Think I may be ok for now. Bought some black nail polish from the 99p shop and blacked out the light behind the volume knob which was illuminating the whole thing in a bright white light. Seems much better now. Girll in the 99p shop thinks i,m a cross dresser now though...[:mad:]

I have a Becker Traffic Pro. Very steady in appearance and superb quality. If you can get the b*stard satnav functions to work then even better!

I occasionally swap it over for a cheap new Pioneer which supports MP3 discs and an iPod, but the Becker is a far better radio. Unfortunately it doesnt have any sort of aux in feature and Im not aware of any way to do it (other than an FM transmitter on my iPod/Phone).

Simon

Simon, the Becker Traffic Pro should have an Aux In feature IIRC (although it has to be turned on via a menu for it to be visible), and a Blaupunkt Mini ISO lead will work a treat (You can guess what I do with mine ;)). I'll get a picture of the lead as I believe Blaupunkt sell two versions of their Mini ISO Aux In leads (and only one of them works on the Becker!).

For any of you brave enough to have amplifiers in a Porsche a Blaupunkt lead can be modified to work with a Becker HU too, but I shall leave that for another time ;).

I have a Dayton VDO unit that doesn't have an Aux In but you can use the CD Changer socket (Mini 8 Pin ISO) and fit a lead with a 3.5mm jack (see link below)

You can't control the iPod from the radio but it works fine and can be controlled as usual from your iPod
