Grills and Warranty

Gwsinclair said:
I agree this is a ridiculous situation, however the OPC warranty is certainly the most convenient for getting repairs done with a courtesy car etc. The only issues many of us face with the warranty are these grilles and a hardwired dash cam (and I’ve just found a solution for the dash cam!).

The grilles on my 987 are easy to remove once every 2 years for the 111 point check so I’m happy to do this.

Please don’t forget that you will have to remove the grills before making any claim, which might be difficult if you break down on the road and have to be recovered. (Mind you, it’s one way of passing the time whilst waiting) The insurance company will most likely reject any claim if there is evidence of them being fitted, particularly as they have refused so many requests for this and it will likely be repaired at an OPC.

By way of an update to the responses I received a few months back when I queried putting Zunsport grilles on a 997 GTS:

- I took my car to an OPC to have the warranty extended and they noted the grilles would prevent this

- Porsche Cars GB got involved and arranged for the car to be photographed and examined with the grilles in place and the case was forwarded to Porsche AG for consideration

- The Porsche AG conclusion was that as Zunsport could not prove the impact on airflow which the grilles have, so Porsche could not provide any warranty if they remained in place

- Zunsport were involved and said while they have proof of the airflow impact, this intellectual property is owned by Jaguar via the grilles they supply to Jaguar cars and Zunsport are unable / unwilling to release this to anyone. I read this as they do not have specific airflow impact assessments for any Porsches.

So my particular issue has been resolved by taking the grilles off and extending the warranty. The grilles can do some damage to paintwork so the option of taking them on and off wasn't appealing to me, but I suppose is technically possible although the grilles will only withstand this a few times before they are weakened.

Hope this answers a few questions others may have.

PS does anyone want to buy some barely used Zunsport grilles for a 997 ? :)

I was going to look into buying either some plastic mesh or some steel mesh. Cutting a template to cut the mesh to size and shape. My thoughts were to also acquire some plastic flexible trim to place around the cut edge and then fixing to the appertures with cable ties of a matching colour bearing in mind the the larger air apperture would be more awkward.

Post your comments belowe but to someone other than myself. Thanks.
