Fan not switching off!!!

Evening all
Had my 944 2.7 for 2 months - perfect..... until tonight. Switched off, fan kept running. 2 hours later still running. Took car for short drive, switched engine off, all good. Later on, fan running!! Took car for run, fan currently off.
Thoughts, practical solutions greatly appreciated.....
(I am 944 enthusiast, mechanical novice - keen and willing to learn!)

Thanks in advance

The simple solution is that the sensor in the radiator has failed. If that doesnt fix it then look at the relay. Ive had a relay develop a fault and keep the fan running until the battery was flat.

I had exactly the same problem with my 2.7.

It was the thermoswitch in the radiator in my case. Temp fix is to take the relay out when you turn it off!

If you have aircon the switch is a 3 pin one which is a bit of a pain to change, various pipes to undo to have any sort of access to a quite large (30mm?) switch to which most sockets wont fit because the 3pin socket on the top is too big!

If no aircon it is only a 2 pin socket and a lot easier!

Many thanks gentlemen!
I will investigate in good time...

I managed to find and take out the relevant relay - not bad for a tachno-numpty!!

Thanks again

Donald

You will get a secondhand relay from Alasdair on this forum at a fraction of the new cost from the dealers.

New are about £150 inc VAT! []

This is the reason my car failed to start. The lid wasn't secure on the fusebox and water had got in, the relay was clicking like mad when I put the battery charger on.

Question is, can I drive without it tomorrow evening? 40 mile round trip, no traffic and obviously bloomin' cold. Assuming I watch the temp and use the heater if it creeps up.

You can pry the relay casing open, give the innards a good spray of WD40 then maybe some switch cleaner.

if its going off and coming back on (like normal operation but never ending) thats the rad thermoswitch. if its on constant without breaks thats the relay. you can pop it out your fusebox, its the big silver one. bend the crimped edges straight and open it up and you will see that one of the electromagnet switches is stuck on. carefully pop it off with a screwdriver and give the surfaces a bit of a rub with fine wet and dry refit and it should be good as new.

Id this in my old track car, on the hottest day in 2009. No sunroof, fixed plastic windows, heater at its hottest setting and the fan on full. The temperature never got near to red, although I did have to drive with the door open for a while...

My advise would be to keep the heater on full from the outset and to regulate the cabin temperature by opening the window.

Thanks for the reply!!
Can you direct me to ECP please? £12 sounds good....
I believe, after reading all the learned replies, it is not the relay but the sensor.
Is Bert Gear still good for parts?
Been 'away' for a while, good to be back!!

New, or nearly new, relay arrived today from Alasdair. Thanks for the very fast service!

All started and running fine. Just remains to be seen how much water got in under the loose cover....it would seem to be a very bad thing to get water in to the fusebox. [&o]

If you can leave the car running Paul, put the vents on and get the car baking inside. Slacken the 2 screws that hold the fuse board tray in and lift it slightly to let airflow through. Make sure everything is closed and leave the lid off for 20 minutes to get the airflowing out of the hole left with the tray lifted. Should dry out everything pretty quickly!

again, many thanks for replies - will investigate relay and switch in due course...
AND !!!!
Yesterday my wipers turned very funky!!??
The off position now functions like an intermittent setting. All normal settings function normally. So obviously not good as I now have some form of wiper function on at all times!! Is this coincidence or related to me pfaffing about with the fan relay?
I hope this is a challenging one for all of you....

Thanks in advance
Donald

Mine did exactly the same thing once, I now have some nice scratches on the windscreen! It never happened again, but I was advised to spray some contact cleaner into the mechanism.
