Remove the DME relay and you will see the terminals marked on the socket .

Interesting thanks , a right pain this is.
Im supposed to be going to a car meet tomorrow so i may start on this next weekend.
Expect a few frustrated posts then [8|]

I cant help thinking ill be looking for an ignition switch from another 944 though.

it might be nothing to do with the ignition switch .! Why not do some simple testing first before buying stuff you probably don't need ?
I have identified the two wires and their connections where you need to check and I've given you a simple temporary solution to fix it . If you are able to use a multimeter as you say then its a very simple job to test this circuit

Assuming that what Nick says is correct, then you can rule out a loom fault be disconnecting the ignition switch whilst the fault is in progress.

Expose ignition switch loom connector
Turn off engine using key
Whilst engine continues to run disconnect switch

If the engine stops it was the switch.

yes good idea that would certainly identify or eliminate the switch being the fault but how easy is it to get to the switch connector ? i thought it was difficult, to prevent theft by hotwiring

Peanut if youre going to be rude to me do it to my face but expect an appropriate response. I just said ill do the tests as suggested next weekend. Read the post properly before YOU go off half cocked ! , ive ignored nothing. I see youve removed yiu stupid rude comment but ive read it and remembered it trust me.
