Mm , i get the principles you both mention entirely . Terminal 86 on the dme ? surely theres no terminal 86 is there ?
Ill have to attempt to id terminal 15 on the switch
Ill start taking the cowling off etc and get my head round whats what.

Remove the DME relay and you will see the terminals marked on the socket .

I have identified the two wires and their connections where you need to check and I've given you a simple temporary solution to fix it . If you are able to use a multimeter as you say then its a very simple job to test this circuit

Assuming that what Nick says is correct, then you can rule out a loom fault be disconnecting the ignition switch whilst the fault is in progress.
Expose ignition switch loom connector
Turn off engine using key
Whilst engine continues to run disconnect switch
If the engine stops it was the switch.
yes good idea that would certainly identify or eliminate the switch being the fault but how easy is it to get to the switch connector ? i thought it was difficult, to prevent theft by hotwiring
