Door mirror wiring

My door mirrors are not working as they should and I have found that the wiring to the driver's door mirror has been replaced at some time - all the wires are black! I've got the wiring diagram and I need to trace which wire is which, and have some questions:-

1. where is the connector to the door wiring? I have searched for an answer with conflicting results - is it/they behind the carpet by the boot switch or up near the bulkhead under the dash. Probably changed with time - mine's an 89 2.7.

2. I tried to find 2 earths at the mirror - one for the heater and one for the motors, but couldn't find any, which would explain why the heater isn't working. Where does the heater earth wire go to?

3. The wiring diagram shows the motor earth going via the adjusting switch - am I right in thinking that this will only be connected to earth when the switch is being operated, which would explain why I didn't find the earth at the mirror.

Many thanks for any help - I am sure there will be more questions to follow,

Hi Keith

1 Drivers side - inner wing near boot release Passenger side is behind glove box somewhere - I've not had to find it yet!

2 I think there is just the one earth to the whole door, but my drivers side has been messed about with quite a bit!

3 Yes - I think

Cheers

Eventually got both mirrors working correctly - they would both only work in one direction and the driver's side heater didn't work.

I found 2 earth wires in the driver's mirror and assumed that one was for the motors and one for the heater, but still couldn't get things working properly. Coming back to it later I realised that the motors are only earthed when the adjusting switch is operated, so why did I find 2 earths? I decided to check the passenger mirror (this still has the original wiring and the heater did work) and I found that the 2 wires going to the heater are both earths! I can only assume that the relay changes one of these to 12V when operated.

The problem turned out to be two wires crossed over (obviously wheover had rewired the driver's mirror had also assumed one earth had to go to the motors) and a missing wire linking the motors.

What a difference it's made on these frosty mornings to have a working mirror heater!
