Do I need to trickle? And how!

Hi everyone.

I have another question.

My 991.2 Targa that I have now only had for a matter of weeks - doesn't get used often enough, and when it does, it can be short journeys, (with lots of requests to put the roof up and down!!)

So I think I probably need to keep my battery conditioned.

I have looked on the forum, and also on you tube - but cant find much that actually shows me what charger to get, and where to plug it in (is there somewhere actually inside the car, rather than opening up the front, and taking off the plastic to expose the battery?)

Are the chargers standard - or am I possibly going to have a different type of battery that needs a different type of charger?

Which particular model should I look for?

Is it this one -(12V)
ctek-mxs-5-0-battery-charger-and-maintainer

Is it recommended to plug in a charger / conditioner, every time I park the car (especially as it's likely to be unused for a few days)? Or do I only plug it in if I am leaving for, say, more than a week?

And the sequence too make it work apparently is this:
"Put key in ignition turn on the ignition but not start the car. After say 20 seconds i turn off the ignition. Then plug in the charger into footwell socket and then plug charger into wall socket and turn on."

Anything else I should know?

Many thanks

Steve

Hi SGoody1, yes look very similar to the one I use (mines a BMW branded version ). I used the 12v socket that is located in front passenger footwell. I have a thin gauge extension cable that is feed towards the passenger door the gap between the the sill and the door is big enough to pass the wire into the car. So I can even lock the car!

The CTEK MSX 5.0 is a very popular choice on these forums, with a number of options being available for connecting to the battery, including that described by Carlton. Connection to the battery itself using the supplied croc-clips or flying leads needs to be via the positive terminal and a suitable earthing point on the body.

There are plenty of alternative battery conditioners available and the NOCO GENIUS5 has its followers.

I use the CTEK one you show above and leave it plugged into the cigarette lighter socket in the passenger footwell passing the lead out under the passenger door. You can leave like that permanently if needed

And the sequence too make it work apparently is this:
"Put key in ignition turn on the ignition but not start the car. After say 20 seconds i turn off the ignition. Then plug in the charger into footwell socket and then plug charger into wall socket and turn on."
Not quite - plug the charger in, but not yet switched on. Turn on the vehicle's ignition, then switch on the charger. Check the charger light is illuminated and leave the set up for a minute before turning off the ignition, leaving the charger connected and live. You can now leave the car and lock up. It's good practice just to checkback on the first couple of times, after say a hour, to verify charging is continuing and auto-disconnect hasn't cut in. Also bear in mind, if the mains power supply is interrupted at any point, charging will cease and you will need to reset it.
Regards,

Clive
