Diary of a 2.7/ 911

Any ideas? I'm left scratching my head, I took my car for an MOT yesterday, after checking and ensuring all the lights where ok and replacing the brake pads. I was quietly confident the car had no issues and would sail through. However I got a phone call to say the car had failed, and it was missing 'Steering locking device' both on the near side and offside track rod end. The reason I'm scratching my head is I only just replaced both track rods to the Turbo tire rods. And everything as far as I could see was in order, nothing missing, I've even checked on the 'Porsche PET' to identify what a steering locking device is, I also asked the MOT station to clarify what, and where its is or should be? Any advice would be most helpful. My gut is telling me there's nothing wrong, and they have made a mistake (as they are looking at turbo tie rod ends) or there really is something I have missed ? Marc

Steering locking device -indicates a lock nut to my mind but I can't see a qualified DIYer like you Marc missing them off[:-]

Thanks for the vote of confidence Vitesse :)

the only locking device 'nut' that I know of with the turbo kit is the one arrowed in the image. Are there any others ?

No No I put them in, see previous page and they are clearly visible. I'm quite at a loss for ideas, I might take it to another MOT station to see if they pick it up.

Wow, Popped out this morning (as it was sunny) and jacked up the front of the car to have a good look at what the problem is

and was greeted with this, I don't get it, I only changed them 2 months ago and the car has just sat in the garage since then. I haven't driven her anywhere except to the MOT station which is less than a mile. I'm so upset, can you buy just the track rod end dust covers? I'm guessing not, but I still cant see a missing nut, Steering locking device?

Poor definition but it looks like the the grease seal has been damaged by the ball joint rotating ie-the tapered pin either it wasn't as tight as you thought even though you tightened the locknut up to the correct figure-maybe a bit of dirt or burr somewhere-or the MOT garage has "leaned " heavily on it[:-]

hip hip hooray, replaced the track rod ends and ensured they where nice and tight [;)] took her back and she has passed [:D][:D]. Back on the Black Top.

Just booked my tickets for the classic motor show at Birmingham, hopefully weather permitting will be taking old red and my boys, good day out :) oh and see you there if you are going :)

Not much going on in the New Year so far, just keeping her warm, and taking her out for a quick blast once in a while. So I thought it was time to get a 'Certificate of Authenticity', as my car is recorded as a 1983 car on the log book, as I'm guessing it was imported in 1983, but its really a 1977, and as its 40th birthday isn't that far away. Thanks to Guy White for the forms, I have now posted it and await the return and the information it reveals about the car.

New Year, New Look! After some careful consideration I have decided that I'm going to remove the 930 whale tail and the cup ones, and replace them with 15inch fuchs and a duck tail. My rear arches have already been widened a little to bring them in line with the "SC", or "RS". I really would like the 9inch fuchs on the rear but not sure if they will fit. So once I have ordered the parts, and its a little warmer I will document the change :) Oh and there will be some parts up for sale as well, namely a OEM 930 whale tail and some cup ones.

Popped over to Pro9 yesterday and got myself a Duck Tail :) Just got to test fit/ fettle and spray it. Just wondering on what size wheels to go for now. I think 15s would be the best choice for the car.

Started work on the duck tail today (sun was out or was it the moon:) There are a couple of areas which will need filling and then rubbing back, but generally not a bad finish to the tail. Marc

One coat of primer, one cot of high build filler primer, and one coat of top primer, oh and lots of rubbing back. the finish is near perfect now, just got to test fit and make sure all the fittings are correct then final primer and 2500 grit wet and drying before top coats and lacquer :) I think I need to clean my sensor too :)

Thought I would test fit the Duck tall today. Which has raised a number of Questions?
DSC_0183_zpsclv9wbqq.jpg
Question 1 = I'm not really sure whether I like it :( Question 2 = Panel gaps, I know that this is an after market none OEM product but the gaps seem a little off, I'm guessing I need to do quite a lot more work to make it really fit. Question 3 = Should the black engine grill fit proud or flush ?

OEM engine Lid, and the grill fits flush :)

Duck Tail and the grill sits proud ? Should it ? or is there a special grill fitted to duck tails which is a little smaller ? Marc

Finally managed to log into the new website, Thanks George ;-)

I haven't manage to do much with the car over the last couple of months as it exam session and my job takes over big time:) However I have noticed so Tin Worm at the bottom of the B pillar, so I'm guessing over the

six weeks holidays my grinder/ mig welder and repair panels are in order.

Keep you posted.

Marc

Took "Old Red" out to the Stafford Car show on Sunday with the boys. I think I was the only Porsche there, needless to say the car got

lots of attention, which my boys thought was most funny !
