Dansk Exhaust system middle box removal

Is it worth removing middle box and replacing it with a sraight pipe section on the Dansk system with the little resonator at the end ? So effectively I have a 3 box system at the moment.
Would it sound crap and too loud ?

Mine's a Turbo with a Hayward & Scott system so difficult to directly compare but for what it's worth.....

My original system is 2 boxes (no cat).

I put the H&S rear section on first, which has a silencer about the same size as the original one, and later I replaced the original front section with the H&S straight through front pipe - so losing the big front silencer.

The car is fairly loud but not ridiculously so, it just sounds 'throaty' - more so on boost at revs obviously but driving round town it's pretty civilised.

There is no resonance/booming/increased noise level etc inside the car either, which had concerned me with losing the front box, but it's turned out to be fine.

At Bedford it was measured at 99-100 static at just over 4000rpm and so was just under the static noise limit but I didn't have any problems on track with the drive by limit even towards the end of the day when I stopped short shifting :)

Don't know what the silencers are like on a Dansk though.

The silencers are very effective on a Dansk, IMHO you get a quieter exhaust than the standard Porsche version.

After I fitted a Dansk rear box to my S2 it was noticeably quieter. A few years later the cat cracked so I had it cut out and replaced with a piece of straight stainless by a local exhaust fitters. This made it slightly fruitier than the standard but not uncomfortably so. I measured 87db at 4000 revs at Bedford

Hmm oK interesting. Wondering weather to get a more fruitier tone by doing this ! Hopefully it wont be too loud.

Dave, I can't remember now if it is the Turbo or S2, but one or the other has a straight through front pipe, and both Dansk rear boxes... Neither are excessively noisy...

I found that mine was louder Paul. It settled after a while too and became fruitier still - noticeable, especially with plastic windows.

This was a completely different model, though (944 series one).

ok if I manage to get any time over this weekend i'll see it I can get it replaced with a straight bit of pipe

I did this to mine, definitely louder but not like something a teenager sticks on a Corsa or little Pug, I guess that 3 litres just sounds meatier than 1.2 or 1.4? I have a cab so I can really hear the difference but I like it. Of course I have little boy racer tendencies anyhow (red calipers, loud stereo etc) so I am really pleased with the new sound.

Me too ![:D]

I have just put the origional Porsche decat section back after having a straight pipe on linked to a Dansk back section , because I found it too loud for me, and it seemed to strangle the engine, didnt rev as freely.

really ? I find that odd. Usually straight pipes = freer flowing + more volume

Jon Mitchell of JMG has some interesting thoughts on this if you search on the TIPEC forum.I have never seen any proof of improvement with the 944S2.

When ESS(janspeed) developed the exhaust on my coupe they found it made more power with a front box.

ok i've played safe and ordered a dansk front box so i have a full system !

I'd kick myself if i'd had put a straight pipe in and it became louder and raspier than a teenage modded japcan honda on steroids !

OK the 924 turbo will be completely different on many levels but I have a straight front pipe and Dansk SS back box. Sounds great with more burble at tick over when stationary but absolutely no more noise or booming when moving than the stock exhaust back box and straight through front pipe. I'm currently happy.

I have only just fitted the dansk front box (92.445s). Although well made, it was not a straight fit ! The downpipe had to be cut (as the original system is an all in one). The flared opening at the end of the dansk was quite a few mm too big. A sleeve had to be made to allow for the gappage. Weather it was due to the fit or not, the hanger holes didn't line up either so new holes were drilled ! So the cat-back was much easier than the front box for fitment.
The tone / volume is much better with the full system, and could be described as what it should have from standard maybe. It is still not overly loud, but is sufficient and I'm happy.
I have had custom boxes made up in the past on other cars and have been happy with those also but have been louder. I would not hesitate to get a custom exhaust setup provided the fitter was capable. I was originally going to before having the front box put in, but I was afraid of getting horrible rasps with the straight pipe.
