Wow! I've never seen one like that before. Say what you will about the heat and convicts, but we don't need salt on the roads. What a shame this is the result. Good luck on the rescue mission.

I cannot stop wonder how rusty 944's can be found from UK. Seems to me 99% of 944's here in Finland are more or less rust free. Glad to see you guys are fixing these cars though. Sons 951 bottom. Just needed to wash up and put some fresh paint.

i was in finland ivalo in december and noticed the cars are not rusty but no salt on the roads and snow tyres there is your answer minus 2 here means 2 tons of salt per mile which leads to rotten cars
 
Have you pulled the carpet out? The floor on the car actually comes out past the inner sill and joins onto the intermadiate panel below the line id the floor.So if you fit standard sill you will find that they don't line up with were you have stopped the intermadiate panel.You should lift the carpet and check the condition of the floor to inner sill line right round and under the base of the rear seats.You will have to remove all of the sound deadening and the ubderseal type substance on the foor as they put a sort of butumen mat on the floor which is a few mm's thick and it can make the floor look to be solid when in fact all you have is a waffer of rust held in placew by the underseal and the bitumen mat on both sides.If you want to go and find my old post call what lies beneth you will find links to loads of pictures of what I had to do to rectify the problems that I had with mine.
 
I have removed carpet and all the sound deading with a hot air gun and scraper, the gap between the floor the the intermadiate panel is where I have welded in the 40mm x 20mm box section to make up this gap and add strength. Ed

No thanks for the help. I am new to 944's I have got a 1983 528i which hasnt been on the road since 1992 due to the auto gearbox going wrong, I have had it 3 years and have rebuild it with all new parts where needed and fitted a manual box but the one thing it didnt need was welding as it had been stored in a dry garage so is soild. Good looking car Ed! you ve got to love those shark nose 5's. Nice to see you are doing such good work and I am sure that you will do the 44 to the same standard.Good luck with it and if you need any photo's or the like of the sill etc then just shout.
 
Nice E28 Ed. Seems to me quite many Porsche owner have a BMW background..... I used to drive E30 bodied cars late '80's - early '90's. Bought a E30 3 years ago for 100€. It's a 318I, but my plan is install something else under the bonnet. Have collecting S14 engine parts several years [;)] I have also collected some other parts i want to have. When my son's 951 project is ready, we will next focus to my E30 Picture i took last summer

Nice engine mods Ed. I hope to find a little bit time to work with my E30. Looks like i just work with other peoples cars. Just finished a brake setup for friends 2.7L E30. They turned out quite nice

Yes got the outer sill tacked on along the top and seam welded at the bottom, but then run out of mig wire, so I made the panals to go on the front and rear which I will put pics up of when welded in place.

Interesting thread and nice work on the sill. I'm in the BMW camp too, own an E91 but have always wanted and E21 323i, think they're a lovely car. If it wasn't for the 944 (and the turbo itch which needs scratching soon[8D]) I'd be rolling around in one now Keep up the good work Andy
 
Really like to read threads like this. I'm hoping to start doing this sort of work myself. I've not welded anything for about 15 years but am booked on for a course this summer! How easy was it to get the front wings off? I've heard that they are bolted on and also glued with lots of sticky stuff. I have some rot at the bottom of mine and I don't know if it makes more sense to remove and repair or weld a patch in-situ? They are mostly in good condition so I wouldn't want to cause damage getting them off. It looks like you're overlap welding panels on to the outer sill (where the tack welds are now), then joining up to the box section you've welded to the inner sill/floorpan? (where you've seam welded in the picture). Presumably butt welding all the way along would be very tricky, and unnecessary because there shouldn't be a lot of water/muck inside the sills? I still don't really understand how the 944 sill structure works, despite looking at mine for a bit! Are there any good diagrams anywhere of how the panel structure works?
 
My wing was easy to get off as it had been off in the past so it was just held on by the bolts. I could have butt welded the top but once the welds are cleaned up it should look OK plus I am going to be fitting side skirts. The repairs have been done on the cheap only cost me £15 so far. The box section is welded to the food/inner sill then there is a middle panal that's welded to the box section then the outer sill is welded to the middle panal, so you have the inner sill, middle panal and the outsill. Ed
 
Thanks Ed. I'm still a bit confused, if you'll excuse another stupid question, is the middle panel the bit you can see through the hole in the B pillar (the panel that has holes stamped into it). I always assumed that was the inner sill. Or is the middle panel something you added for additional strength (i.e. not there in the original car)? I don't suppose your car has ABS? I was wondering if it's necessary to remove the ABS unit to take off the drivers side front wing?
 
Yes Its the panal you can see though the b piller with the big holes stamped into it, every 944 has got them, my car hasn't got ABS. Ed
 
Rob, I repaired my wing bottoms on the car, no point removing them only to have to re-fit and seal. Just get front as high of the ground as you can and remove wheels. Alan.
