Could the 718 replacement be an EV?

Fear not Brian ... Silverstone are teaming up with Scalextric and will lay a continuous charging strip within the track, on the optimum racing line of course !

I'm inclined to agree with your comment Ralph. The range limitations associated with performance EV's will surely rule them out for the majority of keen drivers.

Re EVs on track use, at Silverstone in September I shared a large garage with a Rally Escort and a Tesla, the latter was recharged midday at the "nearby" M1 Services. The Escort owner replaced that with a race VW Golf in the afternoon. Also there was a guy I know from a RSR Nordschleife and Spa double header in his much modified Alfa 4C which was tended to (changing from wet settings to dry in the paddock) by a race team that support him on trackdays.

We can be a real mix on trackdays.

Harry Metcalf (Harry's Garage - YouTube) has just done a really interesting piece on the future of EVs and ICE. The focus is on classic cars, but it applies also to what we are driving now.

Interesting to read that the Macan EV prototypes finally are out on the road … and it’s still 2-years off release!

It’s been about 2-years since Porsche announced that the replacement for the current Macan would be an EV, so if the next Cayman also is going to be electric and we’ve still yet to hear an announcement, I reckon that the current 718 is going to be around for quite a few years yet, although surely it will get some sort of refresh fairly soon? Maybe Porsche are mulling-over making it a mild-hybrid in the intervening period?

May have been mentioned already but aren't Porsche developing a new 'non-polluting' fuel?
I’m afraid that Andrew’s right Jason. Car manufacturers - Porsche included - are committed to an electric future and synthetic fuel will only provide a short-term reprieve for the IC engine. I’m sure that synthetic fuel will only play a very small part in Porsche CEO Oliver Blume’s ambitious goal of having a CO2-neutral balance sheet by the end of the decade.

Incidentally there’s an article on synthetic fuel on p46 of this month’s PP.

Agreed Dan, but as Dave pointed out it’s just a lazy rendering of the Mission R concept. I guess we’re going to have to wait a while to see what actually materialises with the test mules when Porsche gets beyond stuffing an electric powertrain in a few 718s.

Incidentally, I can’t believe that I kicked-off this thread more than 3-years ago! 😲

Jeff,

You are ahead of your time.

Ha,Ha! Not sure about that Ray … I’m just amazed that it’s taken Porsche so long to come to a decision. They’ve got a lot of work to do to get a production-ready car for release in 2025, let alone reconfigure the line for an electric vehicle.

Very impressive and quite an exciting prospect.

Just imagine the dilemma for the marketing department: Do we make the next Cayman fast, very fast, super fast, hyper-fast or illegally and insanely fast? It unfortunately also increases the urgency that 'Big Brother' applies to taking control of our motoring. They can't legislate for electric scooters effectively at the moment so the 'ban them all' brigade will get more vociferous. But the possibility that anyone with a current driving licence could go out and rent / finance / purchase a car with this sort of power really does get a bit frightening.

I agree on both counts John, though the GT4 e-performance is more a race car than a production development tool, and the Porsche marketing department is going to have trouble reining-in the engineers to control the electric Cayman's performance and keep it in line with the ICE 911 products.

Like you I’ve always had concerns about the putting the impressive off-the-line performance of BEVs into the hands of any driver, skilled or inexperienced, but no doubt now the environmental brigade have conquered vehicle emissions and noise they’ll be turning their attention to restricting cars’ performance. That abominable BRAKE organisation’s going to be campaigning to have someone with a red flag walking in front of every vehicle!
