Cayman Register Secretary

Oddly enough I've just received a general email from the Club asking if I'm interested in putting myself forward for the Cayman RS position. Better late than never I suppose, but some hopes of having this matter resolved by the end of January or early February if they're still at the "assessing applicants" stage.!

Is your name still in the hat Helen?

Jeff

I've received the mail today.....
New Year, New Season, New Opportunity?
Dear Gary, Do you want to get more involved with PCGB? Would you like to share your passion and knowledge with other fellow Cayman owners and enthusiasts? We’re currently looking for someone to step up and take the Cayman Register into the new decade. What’s involved I hear you ask? Being such a large and diverse Club with members from a vast array of backgrounds, we’re looking for someone who can engage and assist the larger membership with any questions, problems or just general information that not everyone necessarily knows. This is not a one size fits all position, so the future Register Secretary needs to be able to help organise Register-specific events, technical seminars and even just whip up enthusiasm for the all-inclusive PCGB national calendar events. On top of this we would like the future Register Secretary to keep the members informed. This would include a small article most months (at least 10 out of 12) to be submitted for printing in our glorious Porsche Post magazine. Interested? Then drop us an email to club@porscheclubgb.com let us know a little about yourself and why you feel you’d be right for the position (try to keep this to around 500 words if possible). Best regards Dave Carnaffin Register & Technical Director Porsche Club GB register@porscheclubgb.com

At last the email has gone out to members asking for someone willing to take on the role of Cayman RS, I will still remain an active member for the foreseeable future and will be keeping my Cayman S, good luck to the new incumbent of the position. I will of course remain until he or she is ready to take on the tasks involved.

I received the same email today looking for 991 and Cayenne RS positions, as I subscribe to those registers, so things are moving along now.

I also received an Email regards Cayman RS position. I would like to thank Kevan for his roll in running the Cayman Register for the last few years and continued stand in whilst a new RS is appointed not always an easy task but I am sure you enjoyed the roll.

As a future member you can sit back and relax a bit more and enjoy your car and pcgb.

All the best.

Well the March 2020 edition of Porsche Post arrived today - no Cayman Register report, the Register Directory says Kevan Sutherns is still the RS when surely it should say “Nominations requested” or “To be anounced”. There must be some rocket science involved in appointing a successor to Kevan :)

agree. Would have been nice to have known there was to be no report and thenmaybe one of us could have submitted something.

After all Kevins work it is Such a shame to let the Cayman register grind to a halt especially this time of year when the club is starting to wake up

The deliberations seem to be frustratingly protracted - it's been nearly a month since we received the email from Dave Carnffin requesting interest in the position.

Agreed that we need someone in place ASAP to make the most of the awakening Club season.

I can't see what the problem is.

The RD has the authority to appoint an RS himself.

Perhaps he is waiting for full board approval which is really unnecessary.

In defense of the RD and having had the opportunity to discuss the situation with him it appears that we are not the only register in such a position and the board is insisting on a totally transparent process resulting in the nominations, election etc etc rather than a worthy candidate simply being appointed as has been previous practice.

As frustrating as we may find the situation regards the appointment of a new RS it’s obviously more complex than it would appear and we aren’t privy to the deliberations of the board.

If that's the case then surely a decent communique would be appropriate to let us all know that the appointment system has/is changing. Poor communication causes threads like this to develop unnecessarily and fester unwarranted angst among those that are genuinely interested.

This is the fundamental problem. Directors should be active, be seen to be active, and be supportive of their communities from whom they will require cooperation if they are to develop the Club in their area of responsibility. Perhaps one of the selection criteria should be that they have sufficient time to devote to their roles.

To be fair there isn’t really evidence the the directors aren’t active...just from the limited experience I have of trying to organise a run I have a taste of how process bound and risk adverse the club can be!

As frustrating as we may find it lets put this into context its a minor official in a car club we are talking about not the Secretary General of the UN!

What is necessary in my view is a change in the Articles so that totally unsuited nomination for the Register & Technical Director role is rejected at the nomination stage.

cheers, Maurice

In the past it was a given that the Region or Register Directors (or what ever they are called this week) would have been an ROs or RSs of at least two years experience so that they understood the positions and what they entail. They would also have had experience of dealing with previous Directors and equally understand what their involvement included. It seems ludicrous that one might consider this no longer to be appropriate IMHO.

With regard to the on going search for a new RS it makes me laugh (or not) that, in another thread, there is a suggestion that RO's & RS's are rotated every 5 years. If it takes this long just to find one how do they think that will pan out?

John,

Taking up your points about ROs and RSs having some prior experience of the positions, perhaps it would be useful to appoint an assistant to each position; by default, maybe the runner-up in the "contest" to avoid yet another protracted search? That person could then put themselves forward if they wished - along with other prospective candidates - the next time round.

Jeez! We are taking here of asking a volunteer to come forward be a Register Secretary – I have been in this club long enough to know that they are like hens teeth!

We are led to believe there have been more than one volunteer for this particular post so we should be grasping them with open arms and as long as each one satisfies the criteria, as John pointed above, the surely it should be a simple excercise of appointing the first person who came along.

Why we are making this so difficult is beyond me and by procrastinating over appointments we are letting our members down.

I agree Peter maybe the RD can not choose one of the candidates solely himself ?

Maybe the protocol has changed and the Board has to have the final say.

But agree it's taken far to long.
