Cayman 718T Anyone?

Could be tempted on a trade-in against mine if the numbers stack up next year as mine will be 3 yrs old in Sept... alternatively could just keep it and look at some 'upgrades' post warranty handcuff period...?!

An interesting snippet of information from the evo article, if true:

'There are some bespoke elements, including shortened gear ratios on the standard six-speed manual gearbox'.

I know journos are prone to getting things wrong and Autocar have mentioned a shortened gearshift, which seems more likely.

Yes, Isle of Skye roads are featured in the 718 Cayman T promo video. Moll is near Sconser in the north-east Cullin hills. Unfortunately the weather was awful, for the shoot but it added some atmospheric drama I suppose.

While awaiting my new 718 Cayman GTS, I breathe a sigh of relief that the Cayman T is indeed using the base 295bhp 2.0 flat-4t as widely predicted.

I am also delighted to note that the 718's in the promo video have Michelin tyres fitted. Hopefully, my new GTS will also arrive with Michelins.

No surprises with the engine sound unfortunately. This model is yet another punch-bag for the 718 naysayers.

In my opinion, another missed opportunity by Porsche. If only they had produced a 2.5 718 "R" along the lines I suggested in a previous post.

The new 982 GT4 should be much more interesting.

Geoff and Brian, thanks for confirming the location. Google maps failed me miserably when I tried to find Moll and Am Mol! The cars look great on those roads.....would have looked even better if they'd brought out a 718R instead!!!!!

Amen to that!

Porsche must have transported the two German reg LHD "T" models in a closed transporter to the remote western Highlands and Skye. There is no way they would not have been spotted on the Road to the Isles with a subsequent torrent of "spy" photos posted on forums. There is an active and enthusiastic Porsche community in the north of Scotland and the cars would have been seen on the road to Skye and followed.

The roads they chose for the promo video are remote and empty away from the tourist season. Someone in Stuttgart did a very good job on location research and seasonal timing.

I just wish that the Stuttgart suits had an equally thoughtful "focus group" for their model development!

The problem is going to be that 300bhp doesn't cut the mustard these days. Any decent hot hatch has more (for less). The T worked (just) on the 991 as it already had a reasonable amount of grunt in the base engine. As with the 991 T you will be approaching GTS money by the time you spec it if you go for the nice stitching and buckets and even more if you hit the PCCB button . Maybe if the weight saving gets it close to S performance that may be it's saving grace. As for a Boxster T err that would / should be a Spyder me thinks .

I completely agree with your analysis.

Question, could it be that the man at the head of the new 911 and 718 development deliberately kept the 718 in its subservient place? A conflict of interest possibly? It also explains the decision to market the 718 T with the base engine as with the 911.

I wish Porsche would listen to the enthusiasts who own and drive the cars. The 911 market is completely different to the 718.

On the one hand I am delighted that Porsche have in effect offered a "value pack" for the base model. Then again if that "value pack" was offered for the S would that also make sense? The 718 range has become confusing , why would you buy a base model and spec it , when the T is available? Why buy an S when by the time you spec it, it will be close to GTS money. I suppose the same has been levelled at the 911 range too.

 
I have to agree with your comments Laurence.

Also you have to throw in the effects of WLTP where every add-on option has to be tested which has played into Porsche's hands; it's much simpler for a manufacturer to validate an option pack which includes the most popular items and it gives the customer better value too. It's all marketing-led of course.
