Anybody used Swepco

cococola

New member
How good is Swepco for the gearbox axle noises, does it really make much difference?
cheers!
Alan

Can't comment about it in the 944, but I changed my 964's gearbox oil to Swepco and noticed improved shift action when cold.

Can't say it was any quieter, but it wasn't noisy to begin with![:D]

Had Swepco put in mine before Christmas. Whilst it appears to have reduced the noise, it hasn't gone away completely - I still have a slight whine in 4th & 5th up to around 50MPH (then road-noise drowns out any gearbox noise!).

I've got it in at the moment. Didn't notice any improvement in noise or gear changing action. I think it ultimately depends on how good your previous oil was before the change. It is often forgotten about and not always as fresh as it should be.

A quick question to add to this, which is the Swepco to go for?

Bert has 201 80/90 or the slightly more expensive 80/140. I don't mind the extra cost but wouldn't want to pay it if the product isn't thought to work as well.

This is my thoughts,I wouldnt mind paying if there is an improvement

It made a fantastic difference in my 944 Lux. Eased the shift to make it much improved.

See my post below. I did try Swepco but it did not help a great deal, whereas I saw a huge improvement with Redline.

Thats a great help thanks Martin, did you find the redline much of an improvement and is it reasonably priced against the swepco oil.
cheers

I've tried Swepco in the past and didn't find it to be any different from the standard stuff my garage was using at the time. What I do feel is important on these cars is regular changes of gearbox oil, I try to make sure mine is done every 1-2 years and each time I can feel the difference in shift quality.

I used to use Redline MTL in my FTO & it made a huge difference to the previously stiff, notchy gear changes.

Cheers,
Robbo

Yes I did find the improvement significant. I did not mention that I tried Syntrax before Swepco. Swepco was actually worse than Castrol Syntrax, but with Redline the noise was much better and the shift was slick even when cold whereas with Swepco it was very notchy. It was not too expensive but it does come in US Quarts (£13) which are less than a litre.

changed the oil to redline today and yes the gear change is so much easier and not as notchy,I used to find 2nd gear baulk slightly but not anymore. As to noise reduction I have noticed a slight difference.

Which Redline did you use cococola? Did you get the MTL? And how easy was it to do on the 944?

Cheers,
Robbo

Lemon Squeezy. Remove the fill before the drain plug to make sure it comes out OK (if you remove the drain and empty the transaxle only to find the fill rounds off, well you get the idea...) Warm the plastic bottles of oil in a bucket of hot water for a while to make it more runny (TX oil is very viscous) and you just need a length of clean hose to feed up and over the n/s/r wheel. You hold the end of the hose in the fill whilst an assistant squeezes the oil in.

A few of us have used Redline mtl in the Elan gearboxes and there is certainly an improvement. I plan on doing the 44 sometime soon with the same.

I've got my diff out at the moment so might as well see if this cures my notchy third.
How much do you need?
What type did you buy?
Cost?
Where from?
Ta.

I'm interested in how much people used too. I realise capacity is 2L but Redline comes in US quarts.

Are 2 quarts (circa 0.1L shy) enough? I'd guess so but don't want to make a stupid mistake!
