A new monster

Has anyone ever seen cracks in a 944 shell though? I know it can happen on e30 M3's and old torsion bar 911's but never heard of it on heavily tracked 944's.

The logbook goes with the bodyshell so in reality as was said above one could reduce the whole mileage/value thing to just the shell. I know there are rules about % content of car etc. etc. but in reality its the bits that have identifiable numbers on them that count and in these terms the only bit that really counts rightly or wrongly is the bodyshell.

Still though the logic doesn't add up to me, if one had a low mileage minty valuable car surely one would keep it as pristine and close to factory spec as possible?

Neil, no - have never seen a 944 fracture like say an old 911 targa. The 924/44 was built very well - bit like a W123 merc, but some of them have been abused and perhaps a Scottish / Irish / Channel Island car has been attacked by salty air or rough roads, which a Wilts / Oxfordshire / Somerset car would never have seen. That may have resulted in a tired car, which is hard to recover unless you take in to seam weld it.
I like an original car too, but a re shell especially on an old car is loads of work compared to an engine change.
The rally boys understand that better than any of us.
Hope the 3.2 is gone to a good home, and Paul is not too lonely...

What happened Paul if you don't mind me asking?

Well I did finally receive a deposit last week so yes it does mean that LIL has now been sold [&o] (subject to logbooks, and the balance arriving of course)

I haven't actually seen her for two years while she was stored down at JMG's so it doesn't feel as much of a wrench as I thought it would. As some of you know I started a new business just at the time the 3.2L engine was built for LIL and a few years later this recession started taking it's toll so I simply could not afford a track toy anymore. After two years in storage I've realised I'm never going back to those days on track so it's time to get sensible and move on.

As Ewan has confirmed, it looks like the engine has already been sold on and is now sitting in a different car. I don't think it's for any club or forum member that we know, so I have no idea what their ultimate plans are for it. I just hope they have much deeper pockets than I did and can afford to have a damned good play when it's finished

On a more positive note she was the only car I ever sold on at a profit, and that was after 10 years of ownership (we just won't mention the tens of thousands in maintenance and upgrades - sssshhhhh [:D] )

Every time I go into Glasgow Porsche to get more bits I ask the parts guy to put in the part no for the body in white. But each time he does it it comes back unavailable. So we came to the conclusion that there are none left in the official Porsche system.BUT! that doesn't mean that there isn't one out there somewhere. I would love to buy one and build a car from scratch.I wonder how much it would cost to buy all the parts you need from Porsche and get the rest from people like Elliot or Alistair. As far as I am aware it's only silly little bits that you can't get anymore.

Sorry to hear you had to let your 3.2 go in the end Paul. These cars (modified turbos) are truly a labour of love and sometimes the balance just slips away and there is too much labour or expense and not enough love. I remember riding in Lil once and a very fine example she was too. Shame she was not kept in one piece but each to their own, I am sure she will live on in some form or another. At least you still have your S2 to play with, in some ways the purer and better ownership proposition! I still miss my NA 968 and often wonder if I went the right way with a turbo 3.0!!

Paul was kind enough to break my S2 cherry by letting me have a go in his on the way up to Rutland water a couple of years back, and as has been said before i think,i see what Oli goes on about,it (the S2) was lovely, and i bet it will be super Shiny after its holiday at the bodyshop.[:)].Coming to the New Rutland meet Mr Smith???

Farewell Lil..Very fond memory of a drive in convoy down to the Ace Cafe with LiL and also the Northern meet, the noise she made was like a jet fighter, very turbiny shreaky if you know what i mean, hope the new owners have alot of fun.

I certainly plan to, if the bodyshop ever get past the 'she'll be ready in just a few more days stage' [8|] and then she needs to go straight to Promax for her yearly service and this time the cam chain needs replacing. Poor old Andy has to keep cancelling my appointment because I don't have her back yet.

Very sad to hear Paul, but given everything that had happened perhaps a clean break was the right decision.

However I can't believe you'll be giving up on the odd track day, so do you have any plans? [;)]

Lots of plans Peter, but no funds with which to execute them. It's been nearly five years since my last trackday so I've almost forgotten what they were like. I don't yearn to do another one as much as I used to so maybe I've now gone through that cold turkey stage and am cured :ROFLMAO:

Also sorry to hear the 'news' Paul. Hope the new business is clambering on during the hard times and will pick up enough eventually to get back on the track.
Best of luck whatever you venture is.
