996 Apple Play/Audio Upgrade from Porsche

Thank you.

I had seen the picture with the hole and the wire. I was interested if anyone had a picture showing the whole of the glove box with the box and wires in it, as I wanted to see how much room it took up please?

Many thanks,

Tim

Here you go...

Not much (in my opinion)

You also need to factor in cables of anything you plug into the box of course

Just Treble and Bass on MOST equipped cars, the graphic equaliser is only present on pre-MOST(no fibre optic) cars. If the sound isn't to your liking overall it is isn't too difficult to adjust the graphic equaliser, it's still there but hidden and a bit of a pain to get to in the android layer of the stereo (see my video below and it's in the app "car settings"). Personally I'm happy with how it sounds as it came so left it alone but does seem to work and remember the values you put in.

One other thing, do check your navigation display on the instrument cluster displays correctly, early models show the value for km's for miles so your head unit will say 5 miles to your next turn and you instrument cluster will tell you 8 miles. I raised this with Porsche and they sent me a SD card with an update file on it which fixes the issue, I assume newer PCCM+'s are delivered with the updated software and anyone without a MOST car or didn't get the TOMTOM maps will not notice since their cluster doesn't display direction so only affects a small number of us but can upload the update file as have been meaning to for a bit now or Porsche can be messaged for them to send the update but it's a lot of emailing back and fourth. All you need to do is drop the files in an SD card and plug it in the stereo and it offers you to update.

And correct on that last post, that is where the cables come out, you need to pull the cable through till the box it up to the hole so you have plenty of length to plug it in the back of the stereo then you can pull it back down when the stereo is put in place.

Just newer pic shows how much space it takes up with a phone in there and safety vests. it's pretty compact and the lead being flexible means nothing really you can't get in there that you could before.

Thank you for confirming what I thought re the MOST/non MOST cars and the sound settings. Thanks also for the link on how to get into the operating system. Like you I think the sound is great, although it would be interesting to play around with it to see what impact it has, particularly on the mid range.

As I had a CDR23 before this, I need to get the dash screen coded by a specialist with a Durametric so I can get the satnav guidance on it. Once done I will let you know if the distances show in actual miles or kms showing as miles (Ive read your posts on that issue before): hopefully its been sorted by now...

Just wanted to give an update on my PCCM Plus and some information that may be of use to some with the same unit.

It definitely doesn’t like me using the CPlay2Air - it initially works fine; connects OK and works as if I had plugged my iPhone in using the lightning cable, however within a couple of minutes the screen freezes, then after that the unit switches off and restarts. This has only happened when I’ve had the CPlay2Air plugged in but might be a coincidence I suppose.

The other thing I’ve noticed is that it reset my trip computer (mpg, mileage and avg speed). I’ve read on another forum that someone else has had this issue - the PCCM Plus does ‘talk’ to the car, as you can synch the GPS to the clock (and probably a few other things). I’m wondering whether this reset has been caused by the CPlay2Air glitch above or is something else.

As mentioned before, I plan to get an OPC or specialist to code my PCCM to my dashboard display so maps can be shown in addition to mpg, radio station etc. This may resolve the above.

Hi,

sorry to resurrect this thread but I’ve been installing my new PCCM+ unit in my 986 Boxster S (with cdr23 originally). Could I ask about the antenna bypass in the A pillar please? I can’t seem to find any cable in the pack to do this, but see a note about obtaining a separate cable for the task? DAB is working with the original antenna lead plugged in but it’s not great so assume it’s because this (the bypass) hasn’t been done.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you!

That's correct, the original amplifier attenuates the DAB frequencies as it was designed to amplify AM and FM only. You should have received a very long cable in the box unless the contents have changed since I bought mine shortly after release last year. Essentially there should be a very long cable with a Fakra connector like the original connector for the antenna to the back of the radio and a connector on the other end with a ring terminal to ground. the ring terminal connects to either point the original amplified screwed the the A pillar with and the connector goes to the input cable to the amplifier and routed to the back of the radio.

Here's the Porsche instructions that shows you the kit

Hi,

thank you, I do have that cable but the connector at the end with the ring crimp doesn’t seem to push into anything at the A pillar, hence my confusion. It has a round plastic shroud with 2 ’lugs’. The connectors on the car have square plastic shrouds, adding to my confusion 🙈

Ah, just saw you have a Boxster S, I'm guessing a late one. On page 4 of the pdf it mentions "On 986 vehicles with a new 987.647.105.00 antenna amplifier, the antenna line 986.642.573.00 must also be ordered." I'm assuming you have a late 986 with the 987 booster so will need to order this cable, just check your antenna amplifier had part number 987.647.105.00 written on it and if so ask your nearest OPC's parts department for part 986.642.573.00 if so, I imagine it's just a rarity that so few 986's and no 996's have the later amplifier that it didn't make sense to include in the box or they realised this variant after the kit was assembled, the cable is most likely very cheap if not free for those with a PCCM+.

Thank you. I think I was looking for confirmation of something I already guessed/assumed 😊. I think looking at the instructions there must be a short adaptor/cable to fit between the factory antenna from the glass & the long lead included in the kit. I‘lol speak to my OPC about it in the morning to ask.

Thanks for taking the time to assist! 👍

On another note, for some reason I’m only getting sound from the 2 speakers on the dash, and nothing from the door speakers. These have Bose badges on them if that makes a difference? Does anyone have any ideas as to what I could try wiring wise please? 🙏

If you have a late car with BOSE you should have audio through the Fibre optic link through the adapter box included with the kit so it's a digital signal rather than lines for each speaker so nothing in wiring should need changing to make any difference. First makes sure all your connections are secure. check you have bypassed the CD changer with the link in the kit. Steps 5.4 and 5.5.1. Also just go through the sound settings incase anything obvious is switched off or balance is adjusted strongly ect. With my C4S which has Bose it was plug and play.

Wanted to say a quick thank you 👍

You we’re correct, I do need the additional adaptor/lead to go between the long supplied lead & the windscreen connector. I tested it by using some cores from a 6mm stranded single wedged in & taped to confirm. The lead needs to be ordered (at a cost of £21!!), which I’m a little disappointed with considering the outlay on the unit & nav card. Overall my OPC was good enough to give a good discount on the pccm+, the sd card & the aircon trim panel which even with the additional lead means I’m still up on the deal 😊

I’m very pleased with the unit & although quite different to ‘normal’ head units to install, feel it’s good quality & suits the car so well. Expensive but worth it! 👍

Castorman,

Thank you for the post. I have just booked my car in to be fitted with the new PCM Plus.

Could you please share some photos on where you have put the box including the wireless charging set-up and the cubby hole?

many thanks,

Tim

I have my 996 in today having the new PCCM plus fitted by Porsche.

Does anyone know what the latest SW version is on the PCCM that has the bug fixes (for the KM/MPH and freezing problems) please?

Also how you check the SW version in the new PCCM please (not got my car back yet from the centre but should be ready today)?
