991.2 - Trickle charging from the 12v - driving me nuts :/

Hi all. I've spent two days and 10 attempts trying get it working but without joy. No sequence of plugging in, ignition on/off seems to keep the footwell socket live after I've locked the car. I have had it working before but that was clearly luck rather than the obvious method of JFDI.

Can someone who does this today in a 991.2 or another Porsche with the same 30 minute socket shut-off please tell me what magic school I need to visit to make this work? :)

Please reply if you are doing this rather than linking elsewhere as I've read every post, every pdf manual and my own owners book and nothing seems to keep the socket live. Many of which are different so that probably doesn't help.

This is what the manual says :
  • The power supply is interrupted after about 30 minutes to protect the vehicle battery.
If the load is to be switched on again, the ignition must be switched on once.
So that implies that turning the ignition on again while it's plugged in will disable the 30 min timer but having just tried that I can say it's not the case.

In fact I've just spoke to another 991.2 GTS owner and he has everything disconnected, opens the car, connects to the socket, connects the charger to the wall and then locks the car. Works flawlessly for him but but me it is having none of it. So silly.

Connect the charger up, but not switched on. Turn the ignition on, then the charger. You should see orange light(s) on the charger indicating it is being deployed. Wait 1 minute then switch off the ignition, leaving the charger connected. Check back after an hour or so to confirm orange lights are still showing - a green flashing light indicates charging is no longer effective.

If all else fails, use the crocodile clips option in the charger kit and connect directly the battery.

Regards,

Clive

The charger doesn't have an 'on switch' as such (using a CTEK MXS 5.0) so I'm assuming you mean connect the charger to the socket in the car but not to the wall, then turn on the ignition and then the the charger on the wall socket. I'll go try that now but I'm pretty sure I've already done it in that order, although I might not have waited a minute before shutting off and locking the car.

Thx Clive!

I have two 991.2's. Both charge through the footwell socket using the ctek charger.
All i do is put key in ignition turn on the ignition but not start the car. After say 20 seconds i turn off the ignition. Then plug in the charger into footwell socket and then plug charger into wall socket and turn on. Works every time.

Noted, thx. I'll try that if Plan L doesn't work :)

I notice the CTEK MXS 5.0 model doesn’t have a separate setting for glass mat batteries, yet others in their range, do.
I may be wrong, but isn’t that the battery type in your car ?
Would that make a difference ? Any one out there with info on this subject ?

I tried Clive's method last night and without luck and the socket shut off again. Benelux's just began so I'll see how that goes.
