991.2 multifunction steering wheel retro fit

Hi everyone.


I have just bought a 991.2 GTS and am already after some help or advice.


I have the sport GT wheel WITHOUT the MF buttons fitted and want to have these retrofitted into my current wheel.

is this possible?
I can get the parts and fit but not sure who/how to have them coded in.
if anyone has done this or is aware please can you help

I haven't done this myself but, from experience adding other items to these later generation cars, I'd suggest that you will need to do two things. Firstly, you will need to obtain the VIN-specific code that, once uploaded to the car, will effectively configure your car to recognise the extra functionality provided by the wheel. Then you will need to have that code uploaded to the car (you will hear people talk about "coding the car") which requires a PIWIS to carry out.

You will find it difficult to get the Code from Porsche unless you purchased the wheel from them (in which case the wheel is sold with the Code) but these codes can be purchased over the internet from unofficial but reliable sources. From memory the cost is around $100 per code (you will need only one). Ping me a message if you need a contact for that. Once you have the Code you need an OPC or an independent dealer to upload it to the car in a process that takes around 10-15 minutes only. You will likely find some OPCs are a bit sniffy about this but others will happily do it - just ring around.

PS: Before embarking on any of this I'd suggest that you just fit the wheel and see if it works without the coding work; I seem to recall reading somewhere of some people having full functionality (other than wheel heating) without any further action being necessary.
 
Watching this thread - have exactly the same problem. Not having the multifunction buttons just feels like a terrible omission on what's ostensibly a 'road car'.

What parts do you need? Do they just screw in? Where did you get them?

I changed my 991.1 Sports (no MF) for a 991.2 MF and heated steering wheel - winter lockdown [;)]

There were errors on first restart so I cleared them and they did not recur.

The only coding needed was because I also changed the clockspring to allow the heating to work.

If I were in your position I would either replace the steering wheel with a MF version or just buy the MF button modules (available on Ebay and elsewhere) and fit them to your s/wheel. There are YT videos on this.

Then fit the s/wheel (wise to disconnect the battery and wait for 5 minutes first) and see what happens. It may just work.

That is my experience too. I am just trying to figure out why you are still having difficulties.

i Need to find someone who’ll let me trial their wheel on mine to eliminate the wheel
 
If the control unit in the wheel for the MF function came from another car, it'll likely need to go to OPC for activation as it'll be tied to another VIN. The programming you had done - was this via PIWIS to just change the car coding from non-MF wheel to MF wheel in the options? thanks for the reply. Yes exactly that happened. Wheel control module is my original module as the inputs/outputs allowed the multifunction buttons to be added.


then car was coded with PIWIS to confirm the multifunction wheel

so are you saying that the wheel module now needs programming? Any advice who other then Porsche could do this as I’m struggling atm

Also following this. Porsche OPC said I required a new wheel and steering column stalk module? I think I just need the modules on the wheels swapped out and coding. I can't imagine they make different stalk modules for MFSW controls and not? :(


 
Good news! I'd like to know how this was completed please? I'm looking to change my 991.1 4GTS SportDesign wheel (non-MF) to an MF 991.2 wheel. I don't intend to add heating or have the mode switch dial on the lower right of the wheel, which I think means I don't need to change the clock spring.
