944S2 Track Car Project - Spa April 2019

Good progress Ed, but plenty more still to do so pull your finger out [;)] Can't wait to see it in action on track

The spa track day was epic. Suspension and engine well matched but tyres now limiting factor. Mulling over road legal slicks like toyo r888 or go full slick on a spare set of wheels. Standard brakes with mintex pads stayed strong and true all day. What a great car the S2 is!

I have some continentals on at the moment. Have bought another set of cup 1's so will be able to run 8j all round. Not sure what tyres to stick on, was considering yoko ad08's as an option, rather than the more extreme 048's or 888's I'm booked for spa in October [:)]. Everyone who goes comes back with great reports...I can't wait..

The "Double Gauche" section at the back of the circuit is an absolute joy in a 944, made me feel the car was designed to drive just there [:)]

I'm still making progress.. Sills rustproofed, interior strip out done, just need to re-fit carpets & centre console Sunroof motor & mechanism out (bit of a pain getting the tube that carries the cable out), rear wiper removed. I discovered that if you remove the wiring for the sunroof motor, the boot latch stops working... the live to the sunroof connects to the rear hatch motor live at the sunroof motor plug... I also spent some time with Bilt Hamber de-ox gel removing rust from some engine bay components - servo, fuel rail, some brackets. I am impressed with the results - although it probably needs another go. The ABS grounds / brackets at the back of both inner wings were very, very nasty. Maybe that will solve my ABS problem? I picked up some seat rails that I think will work very nicely - made by Prepfab

6mm Aluminium, nice & light. The bases are slotted, so no worries about matching up with the captive nuts in the floor. Should also be easy to mount on runners. Next job is front lights / ducts. I have removed the fog lights (several screws already missing, so only needed to drill out 2 [:D]) and ordered some LED's to use as side lights in the clear indicators. PU coming off later to look at routes for ducting. Looks like swapping the washer bottle for the small 964 one as Peter E has done will give me some useful space on the o/s

Ed. have fun with the ducting route. If its anything like a 968 there aint much room on the drivers side...[;)]

May be better once I've fitted this.. [link=http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod4715/Intense-Windscreen-Washer-Reservior-Porsche-911---964---993/]Tiny Washer Bottle[/link]

Time for another update.. New washer bottle in
IMAG0151.jpg
The old one is a bit of a pain to remove - had to take out the headlight motor & coil, but it's done now. Tested the new pump & found I had a leak in the washer hose! Luckily I had just enough hose left after I'd cut the leaky bit out.. I've fitted LED sidelights

Drilled a hole in each reflector next to the indicators & mounted a small LED BA9S bulb holder. Some of the bulb holders front & rear were a bit corroded but I think they are all cleaned up enough now. In that pic you can just about see the brake ducting - holes cut in front PU, just waiting for the ducts to arrive. I've mounted the driver's seat, but don't have any decent pics of that yet, also secured the seatbelt buckles to the transmission tunnel with some harness plates on the underside. Time for a wash

As you can see I've bought another set of wheels - Boxster II 8J rears all round, ET 40 and nice & light, fitted with Yokohama AD08's. Weights were interesting - 16" Cup front & contisport contact - 16kg 16" Cup rear & contisport contact - 18kg 17" Boxster 2 & AD08 - 17kg [:D] The wheels were in very good shape - great service from Brian at Jasmine. If anyone is interested, I still have two Cayman wheels of similar weight spec. Unfortunately I still have an ABS fault - and am running out of time to fix it, so the car is back to PH sportscars this morning. There's also a nasty grating noise around 2200 rpm that I hope is just a heat shield or similar. After that, I need to fit the passenger seat and brake ducts, bolt in the lightweight battery and I'm ready to go

Sounds good, but its the oil cooler and power steering cooler that gets in the way....Unless your doing something ingenious with those...[;)][;)]

nope - it's all done [:D] (look closely and you can see the ends of the hoses in the pic above) I went on the inside of the PS cooler, alongside the hoses for the oil cooler. Just enough room for a 63mm hose.

When you fit the air ducts I'd be very interest to see some photos of mountings etc and where you bought them from - This is something I'd like to do to my car. Thanks.

[link]http://www.revotec.com/details.asp?ID=55[/link] With some 63mm hose from ebay in between - I used just over 2m ( I have approx 1.8m left) I haven't got the ducts yet, but cut some holes in readiness - 150x75mm just fits in the driving /fog light moulding. I will have to trim the duct flange to fit. Doing that on Thursday morning before I go to Anglesey. The 968 cooling setup, with scoops attached to the lower arms is really good, but most 944 wishbones lack the correct mounting point. You can just about see them under the car in this pic from Oulton a few years ago

Ed: Turbo to S2, how do you find it? Im finding the lag quite tiring and Im also being caught out by the high gearing (lag is really a problem only because Im in the wrong gear, of course). Im revising my opinion from 'Turbo is always best', to 'Turbo is fastest', with the S2 probably being the easier car to drive in town.

I haven't really driven it enough yet - I'll let you know after I've been to Anglesey. The only time I found the turbo wanting was pulling out onto roundabouts, where the turbo took an age to spool up in first gear. Yours is a 220 with a boost enhancer? I'd expect that to be pretty good. The S2 still feels pretty fast, and mine is a fair bit lighter than the turbo. Steering on the new wheels feels good as well.

Much much better than my 250 was, but that was a long, long time ago and I was far, far faster (as someone else paid for my petro!). [:D] The boost enhancer probably helps a great deal, but Im simply driving it the wrong way, out of habit. Get out of town, over 2,500rpm, with one BAR+ on the gauge and its brilliamt, even with its jelly engine mounts and bushes/dampers.

hmmm - slight hitch this morning - MOT inspection at ph sportscars found the front wheel bearings very loose - which is a bit odd as promax found (and fixed) the same issue 2 weeks ago The suggestion is that the hubs may be worn - so I've asked ph to find me a replacement set of hubs going to be tight for Anglesey..

I think you've hit the nail on the head for a reasonably standard car. Certainly in town you need to be in one lower gear than you would be in an S2. The combination of low compression 2.5 engine and much higher gearing can lead to frequent bogging down when compared to the S2. Once you're out on the open road and on boost it's a different animal. Ed's car is starting to come together, but I think it look way too clean for a dedicated track car [;)] How long is it to Anglesey?

Anglesey is on Friday...ABS still not working. [:(] Might have to go in my standby car...
