944 Turbo.....

Ex Skyline

New member
....flew through it's MOT on Saturday!! And that's after ( apart from a few laps around the block) being sat in my garage since i bought it last September! The chap who MOT'd it said it's in unbelievable condition and, it's had a couple of new sill's recently. This leads me to the conclusion that the guy i bought it off didn't really know what he was selling. Can't grumble about that. So, now it's off to Jon Mitchel in a couple of weeks to see what mod's it's already got and, what we are going to do to it. A 2.8 engine upgrade could be om the card's, funds permitting!! Let the fun begin!!

sounds good and a similar story to mine which i got for a bargain price with some rare and sought after parts on it, suspect head gasket also turned out to be a leaky rad sensor!

2.8 engine conversion sounds good and something i am also looking into, i actually have an s2 engine in component form for sale if you wanted it for a donor block to build up on the side to make a 3litre turbo engine. or you could possibly run it as a 2.8 stroker using std size pistons and a 2.5 turbo crank for a shorter throw, revvy engine.

good luck

What are the options then.....?

std 2.5 block(100mm bore) and 3.0 crank = 2.8l long stroke[:)]

3.0 block (104mm bore) and std crank = 2.7l short stroke (with 2.7 head)[:)][:)]

3.0 block & crank = 3.0 8v turbo (with 2.7 head)[:)][:)]

3.0 block & crank = 3.0 16v (with 16v head) but no off the shelf inlet manifold[:)][:)][:)]

3.0 block and 106mm bore = 3.2L capacity[8D][8D][8D][8D][8D]

2.5 block with 16v head (e.g. - out of a 944s) and 3.0 crank = 2.8l long stroke with better breathing but no OTS Inlet manifold[;)][;)]

3.0l block with 16v head but std 2.5 crank = short stroke 16v turbo[:)][:)][:)] knife edge crank, [:)] light flywheel, 3" DP & exhaust, BB turbo[:)] Stage 2 IC, and some of WUF's subtler mods....[8D][8D][8D]

.......I think thats the main configurations, lots of possibilities for sure, do correct my errors if applicable

Hi Guys, Nicksonmotorsport, i,m defo interested in a gas flowed, bullet proof 2.8 with a modern, big roller bearing turbo and, maybe a bit of anti-lag plumbed into the equation! George, i spoke to Mark Mitchel about a 3.2 lump with all the trimmings and a big fcuk off turbo etc and he quoted around 16k-20k depending on spec'! slightly out of my price range i'm sorry to say! A well built 2.8 is what he recommended to me for fast road use and about two "Ring" trips and a couple of trackdays a year. I would drive and not trailer the car to the "Ring" so would be looking for reliability rather than "balls out"performance.

Makes sense, these engines are basically so strong, but then you are used to that....ex [8|]

as the sills fail on the S2 population, we will have some 3.0L parts avail for a while, but maybe not long

good luck with your project

It was a guy up here in Scotland that owned your car previously. He posted on TIPEC several times. He had an s2 for a short time and sold it and bought the Turbo.

He planned to bring it along to "meets" but he then sold it before coming along I believe. It then turned up with you on PCGB! It's a small world. Good luck with your plans.

Small world indeed. My Turbo has a part on it sold by John Sims - Ive just come across a letter from him in the service history.

Very small world indeed my friends!!! Was it actualy the same geezer up in Jockville that owned my turbo? he never said he had a S2. He bought a Saab aero after the Turbo so i believe. How the mighty are fallen! His name was Hugh Unsworth, a very nice chap to deal with fortunately. Anyway, the point of this post is to let the world know that the "Beast" is off to JMG on Saturday morning so the fun can begin! I'm so excited, i just can't wait!
Please forgive this vulgar display of emotions chaps but, iv'e never "sorted" a Porsche before. 400HP Pulsar-yes; 650HP Skyline-yes (and don't forget i still own "Yobo" although i'm just about to put him up for sale...30k if anyone's interested).
I really am soooooo looking forward to this!

It's only 8 mm wider than standard. Such a tiny dimension really but they do look quite massive when held in your hand

Hi guys,
Finaly got to meet Jon Mitchell on Saturday at long last and, i must first of all say, what a thoroughly knowledgeable nice fellow he is! We stood by my car and discussed what my aspirations were for it for about an hour. He really was interested in what i had to say and made some excellent suggestions and gave me lots of ideas to go home and think about. It only took me 1.5hrs from Brighton to Christchurch early on Saturday morning in what i can only describe as a "spirited drive". The car drove like a dream and pulled like a train. Everything felt tight and solid, no knocks, rattles or bangs. I have left the car with Jon to carry out a zillion point inspection prior to a full big service and belt changes. Also oil upgrades to Mobil 1, and upgraded gearbox oil. There are a few faults that i want Jon to rectify oh, and some new brake pads (Pagid Black's i think were recommended). Then i want it back for a couple of months fun before taking it back to him early novenber for a full winter engine rebuild (2.5lt), complete with a forged knife edge crank,Mahle pistons, re-profiled cam, uprated roller turbo, custom chip etc, etc. I will probably go for KW suspension too and a Superflex polybush set up throughout. Well, something along those lines. I think i want the reliability of a 2.5lt than to start pursuing big horse power figures with big, stroker engines. Anyway, i trust in Jon Mitchells expertise and advice as i know precious little about the fundamentals of automobile technology (i'm a plumber after all)!! Can't wait to start enjoting it though!

welcome to the mad house of 944T modifying... it will only get worse...:)

good choice on 2.5 ltr which as I'm sure Jon would have told you, is capable of well over 400 bhp and i mean wellllllllllllllll over...:)

Have fun

Pete

Hi Pete, yes mate, i can't wait to get it back and have fun for a few months! Jon did explain the pro's of a well thought out and well built 2.5lt engine (no con's worth noting). I'm more than happy to take his expert advice. Everything all sort of made sense to me the way he explained it. Roll on November so we can start "beating it with the modifying stick"!
Pete[8D]

Roll on November then Pete, you'll be on the road before me I suspect, I started work on my block today so guess I had better start a build thread in next few days. I'll cover everything with lots of pictures, should be of help to other forum members even if their not into modifying. Seeing close ups of engine parts from someone else's car can help with many a smaller job.

Hi gang, got a phone call today from Jon Mitchell to tell me the car is almost finished [8D]. He told me that the car had a alarm on top of a alarm on top of a alarm!! What ever that means? Now all stripped out and a blank canvass for a new remote alarm system to be installed. Should all be ready for collection on Friday (not sure now if i can make it this weekend though)[]. Cant wait to get him back again that's for sure! I'll then let you all know what's been done and post some piccy's [:)]

Sounds like mine, I had 2 dead alarms and a duff tracker to remove.

And mine! In fact, JMG decided to leave some stuff in - they didn't seem 100% confident about which bits could go and which needed to stay. I've ended up with an alarm/imob system that definitely works, but a few additional wires and sirens that i suspect are surplus to requirements!

Ha,Ha. How odd? I thought he was winding me up at first! Seems like 944's get 5hit loads of alarms fitted to them for some reason! Anyway, i can't pick it up this weekend as busy working on Saturday. How annoying?![]!! So, it's decided a respray in shiney Black Porsche paint, An Apexi-avcr electronic boost controller (thanks for the input guys),what about security? Any suggestions? It will live in my locked garage and only come out on weekends when the sun shines or it hasn't rained for 24hrs. My aim is to rebuild him in full over the next couple of years. I'm not too clued up on car security so any advice would be greatly appreciated.[:)]
