Exsisting lighter is badly faded. Looking for a new or good condition replacement. Can anyone help? Thanks ??

They are NLA and have been for about 5 years, when they were available they cost close to £80 from Porsche

so second hand is your option

Well I am in the middle of trying to put a 951 back to how it once was ! Now if anyone can and would like to help I need to find one .

The 944 lighter is similar to most other car makes & models of that age / period so a breaker yard may be your cheapest option.

Maybe the same thing was used in VWs of the same era? Might widen your search? Quite a lot of Mk2 Golf stuff is common to 80s Porsches.

Mine is also missing the logo, i have spent many hours looking for a replacement, I cannot find another with the same length handle and with the white logo,

almost all the knob part of the lighter is too short, the element can be replaced,

be nice if someone could just sort out a transfer to stick on them, same as the new logo's for all the buttons you can buy from Garage9

am I wrong in thinking that the markings on the cigarette head are just an opaque white shape with a black surround? Unlike the other door card and centre console switches which are unlit and thus any transfer wouldn't work. If so you'll need a print of the cigarette symbol to scale, clean up the head removing all the old black, place the template in its correct position and spray paint the head, remove the template to give the desired effect. For all those lit up switches if someone knows off an online drawing for these I could ask my son to vinyl print some off and test to see how it works...some of mine are pretty bad, the demister is nearly just an all opaque white switch with little marking left.

put a new bulb in it,

I have been looking at the best way to achieve the factory look,

I think a cold rub transfer onto the lighter then a couple of coats of clear or matt lacquer would do the job nicely.

you might know cold rub transfers as Letraset.

I have found a place that does custom Letraset transfers at about £50 for an A4 sheet, considering the size of the image, and having a bit to hold it still, you might be able to get 100 on an A4 Page.

Pete,

I have a set of switch overlays that I bought from garage 9, they are really good but dam fiddly, they are a bit like the model aircraft decals, I might be prepared to part with them for what they cost, without the post and duty

Hi Martyn

Regarding your comment...'none of the switches light up except the door lock'...that's on the centte console, I'm talking aboit the dash switches...cigarette, demister, recirculator, both fan knobs, A/C, rear heater and headlight etc, those all light up on my car...most are worn...the demister is the worse with about half the black missing leaving the white opaque surface which is what lights up. It is these which I wish to make templates for so that I can renovate them.
Thanks for the kind offer of the transfers...perhaps in the future when I get to doing those and if you still have them, right now my wife is likely to kill me if I spend anymore on this car...got to pay for the MOT ticket this week too....yikes

For those Pete, I would just buy some replacements off the bay,

I bought a box of switches and a complete fuse box of the bay for £30 that gave me enough spares to keep me going for a while

it included all the relays and fuses too

Cheers Martyn, I'll keep an eye open when pennies allow... I'm hoping that my son will make a start on removing the dash in the not too distant future, that would be a good time to take a closer look at the smaller details.

BTW, was it you who kindly sent me some thermister sensors a year or so ago? For the life of me I can't find the damn things, would you have the part code so I can track some more down please, I seem to recall mention of them being available from RS? Fixing the heating is the top priority once the dash is removed.

Cheers

Pete
