Hi

I am looking for a 944 Turbo with 100k or less and with full service history!

If anyone has one for sale please contact me.

Nick, you may get a few people suggesting that condition is a better indicator of a good car rather than mileage really but you may also want to advise whether you are looking for a 220bhp or 250bhp, colour, options, year (for example, bridge spoiler or not) etc.... unless you are not too bothered besides the mileage issue. Good luck.

I am not that bothered about the colour or the bhp unless you think that makes a huge diffrence?

I have looked at the red Turbo you suggest but it seems expensive considering the mileage!

I'd suggest you ignore the mileage & go and drive some. It's easy to tell the good ones after driving one that's a bit sub-par

a 90k miles car on original suspension / wastegate etc.. will be nowhere near as good as Nick's old one. There's a big difference in the power delivery of a car with a standard / tired wastegate, and one with just a simple boost enhancer, or better still a dual port wastegate. It's not so much about maximum power (although that helps), but more about extra mid range torque, and much faster response.

Lots of things on these cars will cost ££ to put right - much better if the previous owner has done it. Aircon, suspension & bushes, clutch, sills, etc..

I think Nick's old car had the seats re-connolised didn't it?
 
Given that a 1990 car doing 10k a year would have done 210,000 miles by now and that they do not really appreciate being sat around for long periods, provided they have been maintained to a decent level anything under 150k should have plenty of life in it. I would be far more concerned by condition/recent history than mileage. I have done journeys in my coupe that have added 2k miles in a week and if fuel was cheaper it would have been on 300k at least by now.

I think dampers/bushes last around 100k / and the gear linkages similar - The rest can show minimal wear after 200k - the seats sag a bit/ the stalks gain some looseness and the front glass (windscreen / headlights) will show some sandblasting.
Wheel bearings 150k ish all though this may be age related and standing around on them wont do them much good either. Electrical bits and pieces probably suffer as much lack of use (corrosion) as they do from wear except maybe the alternator, mine was good for around 180k. The turbos themselves can fail, between 80 and 200k but probably from misuse or ingesting foreign objects - the metal pipe under the inlet manifold is known for collecting scale/carbon and it exits in front of the turbo inlet.

Wastegates have an effect on performance and these may suffer from heat more than corrosion - however if you want to extract the true potential from a turbo these are one of the first items to go.

So condition over mileage would be my advise (they had a reputation for being clocked when newer anyway - built to last so don't show wear)

oh and there have been some low mileage examples under 50k for sale over the last couple of years - over £10K - if kept in a dehumidified garage they may be worth it! if not they may have lots of issues - perished rubbers - internally rusty sills - internal engine corrosion if not run for long periods and excessive start up wear if the oil has drained down.

Thats something of a speculative price...

OP, it would be a mistake to buy strictly on mileage: which you seem determined to do. Its the condition and the service history bills that matter. Only when you have found two identically well maintained and equally rust free good condition 951s, should mileage become part of your decision making process.

A guy on TIPEC Selling a lovely Red Turbo with bluprint engine, up on the miles but in super condition, with all the right bits 300+ bhp inner pictures of the sills which are as new, a brilliant starting point.........................do not be put off by miles as already said.
