911 or ?

I was asked over the weekend about what I was considering changing my car too next.
Used Turbo or a Boxster GTS have been considered, but then this launched this week.

So the Mclaren sports series comes into the 911 bracket...

I would!

Only cars that interest me right now are this McLaren and the Lambo Huracan. I love Porsche engineering but the current crop of cars leaves me cold. The Cayenne S Diesel is easily the pick of the current cars I have driven (which is all of them bar the GT4/GT3RS/918). Now a mini 918 would def tempt me!

PS: the fastest/sportiest Aston Martin ever made (V12 Vantage) I drove at Millbrook last week feels totally ancient compared to even a 996 so that's all AMs ruled out for me in the future.

We drove the same mechanics on the road a while back, agricultural springs to mind with the slush box!! shocking but made a wonderful noise []

It was the unworkable handbrake by the drivers RIGHT leg that made me laugh out loud to the AM copilot. Apparently a historical trait they thought was a good idea to keep! Made me really cherish my drive home in my 911!

Very tempting - I like the look of it a lot.

To drive though the 991 TTS is a step up from the outgoing 997, now I've had a chance to stretch ii legs, it is more involving and have a very nice noise....albeit quieter than the shouty GTwhatchamacallits.

Not driven a 92/4 4/68 then. The ultimate in how to get the handbrake lever stuck up your trouser leg, but to be honest it happened more in the drum braked 924 than it ever happened in my 944 turbo cabriolet because with no auto adjustment the lever in the 924 can come up a lot higher. Come to think of it wasn't the 928 the same?

Not being that well up on the Mclaren family lineage I had to Google the 570s to see where it stood in the range as to be honest they all look pretty similar. OK so this is a £150k car and therefore the entry level model. As the others start north of £200k that is a plus. I am also prepared to buy into Mclaren DNA and design integrity. These are serious people who deserve respect. Performance figures are pretty impressive with 0-124 nearly a second faster that 991ts according to Autocar. That is not to be sneezed at though in practice how much of it is usable in the real world I'm not sure.

Things I don't like are that is comes on Corsa tyres, has worse fuel consumption than its Porsche benchmark rival, lacks space behind the seats and may well want more frequent and more expensive servicing than once every two years. But what puts me off more than anything else is the screen based driver information systems. I still lament the passing of round dials and can't warm to the squashed up offerings from the current Porsche range so the Mclaren Playstation is beyond the pale. Is that important? Well to me it is because of all the elements on the car it is the part I spend most time looking at.

This latest McLaren is a breath-taking, pulse racing, glamorous piece of kit that will cause a sensation and make you will feel a million dollars every time and everywhere you drive it. [] It will be a thrill you will never experience in a 911. I would guess it will similar to our old 430's, Nick.

But, if you buy one be prepared for the pain too. You will need to be within spitting distance of your main dealer to resolve all those little niggles and non-functioning systems. You will expect to pay a large 4 figure bill for servicing every year. You will need to replace dislodged aero every time you give it the beans on anything less than M class roads. You will be driving a lot on your own because I don't believe there will be the fellowship and camaraderie that we all enjoy with Porsche. Tours away will bring trepidation and a hope it will all be alright and you will get round without problems. You will need to join a gym to train for getting in and out elegantly! []

Well I have to say it is a stunning looking piece of kit, but would I want to own ?one probably not I think the
cost of ownership and aftersales support from a well established mfg would be the main reason.
It may be a car to look at after they have all the bugs ironed out,say in a couple of years. There is no reason
to question its lineage as Nick says, but selling cars is more about financial clout in the long term.
As to its competitor the turbo s, great spec mind blowing performance and being part PCGB []

Until I got the financial opportunity to buy a 996 I always bemoaned the headlights taking a bite out of the bumper, then I test drove mine and you can't see the headlight when you are in the place that you will occupy most. Conversely sitting in the driving seat is exactly where you will always sit and look at gauges that offend you, no getting away from that.
