718 Cayman GT4 is here – at long last.!

No coincidence at all, the 718 GT4 has the same limit as it's the approved torque limit of the unit...

Utz's comment does seem odd given the well known "tunability" of turbo engines, although long-term durability on a highly-tuned engine would have to be a major consideration for the manufacturer.

Maybe the limitation is more due to the torque limitation of the manual transmission. As I noted previously, the GT4 and GTS engines share the same max torque figure of 420Nm. Surely, no coincidence?

Jeff

Jeff,

The PDK versions of the 718 Cayman GTS have 430Nm of torque. Plus 10Nm over the manual gearbox cars. Similarly on the 981 GTS PDK, 380Nm against 370Nm for the manual versions.

Brian

I can't say I have intensively listened to the video but for all the reasons I've quoted before about emissions motivated changes, the old 3.8L is not a good base for meeting new and future Euro 6d/7 requirements, hence end of 9A1. Interestingly I understand the GT3 Spyder engine incorporates the new vertical injector arrangement, whereas the 991.1 GT3/RS do not.

I understand the 718 PDK box torque limit is rated well above 500Nm

I don't think you're right there Brian, the 981 has the same torque for both gearboxes as far as I know. Only the 718 models differ as they've hit the manual gerabox torque limit.

Do you have a source for the 370Nm figure? Wikipedia lists both the same for 981s: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_981

EDIT: sorted it. Boxster GTS has 330PS and 370Nm for both gearboxes, Cayman GTS has 345PS and 380Nm for both.

Ralph,

The respective weights I have posted are from the handbook Kerb Weight DIN values.

They will likely differ from your definitive corner weighting measurements, although I would expect the values to fall within the range quoted in the handbook.

Brian

Brian,

Understand but I was taken by how little my weight exceeded handbook lowest weight given all the electric motors and PDK I have. Anyway I’ll revert when I get home.

So mine was 1,416kg PDK

Yes Ralph, it too was my understanding that the PDK transmission has a much higher torque rating than the manual. With the well-documented GT4 manual transmission failures - albeit due to a known manufacturing defect - Porsche will be treading carefully with respect to the manual unit's torque capacity.

Regarding the latest injection technology on the GT3 Spyder - just part of the manufacturer's continuous development process?

David,

Regarding the 981 GTS torque figures.

My apologies. You are quite correct. The 981 GTS has the same 380Nm torque figure for both gearbox versions.

Only on the 718 GTS PDK is an extra 10Nm applied

My figures were quoted from photocopies taken from the 981 GTS driver's handbook last week. I mistakenly read the 370Nm figure from the 981 Cayman S.

Sorry for the confusion.

Brian

The emissions requirements have required a generational change from the 9A1. I understand the first engine to get the new technologies was the 991.2 range, and all the major changes (different alloy for the block, injector arrangement and pressure) went first into the 3.0L engine, and were then implemented as 'convenient' in the GT engine developments. I guess the injectors were not ready in time for GT3 991.2 launch but could be introduced for the Spyder. The 991.2 and GT3 engines had adjustable exhaust cams already which were lacking in the 981 GT4 9A1 engine, but now the 718 generation gets all the goodies.

Looks good, heres mine , I may have gone a little mad but is similar to my current one

Congrats! Spec can still be changed mind you.

Ralph - I've gone for something like this:

Any comments or criticisms welcome

Looks very smart.

I gather the blue is a tad lighter than rendered on the configurator; I'm colour blind but even I can see why black calipers are better than red. Have you seen a Gentian Blue car?

The one thing some people seem to dislike is the chrome Porsche script on the rear but on a darker colour car it adds some contrast.

Do you have a build or lock configuration date?

Ralph

Great spec. If you don't mind, what made you want to upgrade? Some say the 718 isn't much of a step on from the 981.

I'm torn on Gentian. Having seen it irl it does change in the light and the configurator really doesn't show it at all. May end up changing colour scheme completely, I've also been considering black with the satin aurum wheels or maybe launch spec yellow.

Thanks for the tip, I think I will keep chrome lettering to match the silver wheels.

I'm also undecided on buckets. Haven't driven a car with buckets (only sat in) so need to wangle one with the dealer.

No solid build or lockdown dates as of yet, just been told delivery later this year.

Given I'm spending your money here [:D] I'd add....

Auto Wipers for convenience in mixed conditions

Folding mirrors - less risk of damage parking up, particularly on street in Spain, or in Devon with little old ladies driving past + confirms car is locked

Speed limit indicator - now camera based

With your Alcantara Sun Visors and leather upgrades, how can you not have Steering Column Casing in Leather - it really does finish off upgraded leather

Now it's OK..

Ralph

thanks, the wipers and mirrors I will add for sure. Not sure about the leather however.

Thanks

A number of reasons to be honest and in no particular order, I’m hoping I get a PDK, I’ve never had the chance to spec a GT car from new for myself, I believe the car will be dynamically superior, the noise limits at tracks are prohibitive and getting worse.

I don’t expect a massive difference but I’m in a position where I can indulge and I wont have to pay a hefty premium this time.
